The research shows that wild geese are a useful benchmark for evaluating the behaviour of geese under human care. It also supports the use of time-activity budgets as practical tools for evidence-based husbandry.

But high inactivity rates among the captive geese highlights the need for further enrichment, and dynamic enclosure management to further improve goose behavioural diversity. 5/6

Negative ‘abnormal’ behaviours were very minimal in captive geese, suggesting management supports good welfare, while the birds still expressed healthy, goal-seeking behaviours such as grazing – which points to an enriched captive environment. 4/6

Wild geese were more alert to their immediate surroundings, more often scanning their environment for predators, and also spend more time on preening, bathing and other maintenance behaviours. 3/6
