Those who sell herbal medicines are gifted with eloquence, something that most doctors lack. Doctors know the scientific facts, most of which are difficult to breakdown in a way that the layman can understand. This makes them look clueless.
Have you noticed that most con men are very convincing? You’ll only realize it after being robbed. Sadly, health is not like money that can easily be recovered.
Before someone selling things in the bus convinces you that your blood is dirty and needs cleansing, think! Use your brain, friend.
In medicine, there’s nothing like a dirty blood or colon. The careful choice of these words by these con men is to direct you to the next phase: ‘You need cleansing’.
That’s how many people have ended up taking laxatives and sleeping in the toilet because of diarrhea. You’re not being wise. You’re being foolish!
A blessing to those who undergo your passionate care for humanity, causing countless smiles and opening their visions.
Karamoja is blessed to have you @AttoGladys 🙏
Have you seen something beautiful today?
This is Maria and I. With her permission, she's my highlight story for World Sight Day next month.
After enduring two years of avoidable blindness caused by cataract, Maria made a long journey from Nabilatuk, a remote district in Karamoja that many people are unfamiliar with. She was accompanied by her granddaughter for support as she sought medical help.
Upon examination, we discovered that Maria’s left eye suffered from optic nerve atrophy, a condition that rendered vision restoration impossible for that eye. Her right eye, on the other hand, had a total white cataract.
I initially hesitated to proceed with surgery on the right eye, suspecting it might also have optic atrophy. And because the cataract obscured the view of the retina, it was only possible to assess the condition of the optic nerve after cataract removal.
I was concerned that if I performed the surgery and Maria still could not see, she would be disappointed and might return to her village with a negative message, discouraging others from seeking help. Conversely, if the optic nerve was healthy and the surgery succeeded, Maria could regain her sight and hope.
Florence, my clinician, encouraged me to proceed with the surgery. I am grateful for that encouragement, as it turned out to be one of the best decisions I have made for another person’s well-being. The surgery itself went smoothly and without complications.
Today morning, as soon as the bandage was removed, Maria’s face lit up with a smile, the most beautiful smile I have ever seen. She began identifying the colors of our clothing one by one, filling me with immense happiness and relief.
Maria shared that she had previously depended entirely on her two granddaughters for daily tasks such as cooking, washing clothes, and guiding her to the latrine. She felt a loss of dignity, unable to work on the farm, thatch her house, or sort grains.
Her granddaughters had dropped out of school to care for her, and Maria experienced isolation as her friends distanced themselves. Despite this, her granddaughters would bring her outside each morning to enjoy the warmth of the sun, an act she appreciated so much.
Now, everything has changed for Maria. She says her granddaughters will be able to return to school, and she will be able to resume her life and enjoy her independence, a thing most people take for granted.
When asked what message she would share with others in the community who are suffering from cataract blindness or are hesitant to seek surgery, Maria responded: “Now I know that there is life in Moroto Regional Referral Hospital. I can confidently tell people to come and have surgery. I will tell them about the miracles that happen in this place.”
The Hepatitis B birth dose vaccine will be officially launched into the routine immunization schedule on Friday, 5 September, 2025 in Pader District.
This vaccine is given within 24 hours of birth. It is one of the most effective ways to prevent mother-to-child transmission of Hepatitis B and to protect new born babies from chronic liver disease, cirrhosis and liver cancer. #MOHatWork | #NoHepUG
