In the early 1990s, Palm Beach’s old-money clubs (e.g., Bath and Tennis Club) had a well-known pattern of excluding or severely limiting Jews and Blacks.

Trump publicly criticized this in 1990 interviews, saying he wouldn’t join clubs that barred them.

In 1995 Trump converted Mar-a-Lago into a private club that was the first to accept African Americans, Jews and openly gay couples.
