Some months ago, a patient walked into the school health centre complaining of continuous purging (diarrhea) and feeling very weak.When I asked what happened, she explained that she had eaten the remaining rice and beans she kept from the previous day.

She noticed it had become gummy, but she didn’t want it to waste. The piece of meat inside was quite big, so she decided not to throw it away. About two hours after eating, she started having severe diarrhea.I asked how much the food had originally cost.

She said it was around ₦1,500. Unfortunately, she ended up spending ₦35,000 on treatment.What a terrible business deal!

Please be very careful with what you eat. She was lucky to survive. Acute diarrhea can be extremely dangerous and even fatal due to severe dehydration from fluid and electrolyte loss leading to shock.
