Protecting our seniors starts with awareness. The United States Attorney’s Office is proud to engage with senior communities to raise awareness about elder fraud scams and help older adults recognize the warning signs of financial exploitation.
Statement by Jerome F. Gorgon, Jr., United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan:
"Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche is a humble working man and public servant of the highest order. He started as a paralegal and worked his way to the top of the Department of Justice. He knows the work of a U.S. Attorney’s office from top to bottom—because he has done it. Under his leadership, the Department is driving down violent crime, eliminating drug cartels, and fighting fraud to protect taxpayers. All Americans benefit from his hard work.
Some outside of the Department have opposed him from a position of ignorance. But as a U.S. Attorney who has the honor of working under his leadership, I enthusiastically support his nomination and pray for his swift confirmation."
Today, SAC Runyan joined Farmington Hills Police Department Chief Piggott in announcing the capture of Edgardo Luis Perez, who was wanted for his alleged involvement in the murder of a 56‑year‑old man in 2001 in Farmington Hills, Michigan. In 2003, the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office charged Perez with felony murder, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan subsequently charged him with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution after Perez chose to flee.
Thanks to decades of investigative work by Farmington Hills PD and FBI Detroit, and through coordination with FBI Legat San Salvador, the Guatemala City Suboffice, the U.S. Embassy in Guatemala, and Guatemalan law enforcement authorities, Perez was arrested in Guatemala in February 2026 and was recently extradited to the United States this week. Perez will now be brought before the judicial system to answer for the charges made against him.
To anyone who believes crossing international borders will allow them to escape accountability, let today’s announcement serve as a clear message: distance does not erase responsibility and time does not diminish our resolve. The FBI and our partners will continue working across jurisdictions and around the world to locate fugitives and return them to face justice. https://t.co/WRWcln5Z6g
