June is Men’s Health Month, a reminder that men’s health matters both inside and outside the workplace.
For many men, it can be easy to put responsibilities, work, and the needs of others first. In healthcare especially, we are committed to delivering safe, patient centered care every day. But in order to continue caring for patients, it is equally important for men to prioritize their own physical and mental well being.
More than half of men delay or avoid routine health screenings, and conversations around mental health are still too often pushed aside. Yet a significant number of men experience ongoing stress, anxiety, or depression without seeking support or discussing what they are facing. Preventive care, routine checkups, rest, and taking time for a mental reset are all important parts of maintaining overall wellness.
Taking care of yourself is not stepping away from your responsibilities. It helps ensure you can continue showing up for your patients, your families, your colleagues, and yourself.
At USAP, we encourage men everywhere to make their health a priority this month and throughout the year.

As Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month comes to a close, we recognize the individuals whose contributions helped shape the future of medicine and anesthesiology.
Dr. Quintin Juan Gomez, often referred to as the “Father of Modern Anesthesia” in the Philippines, played a major role in advancing the specialty both nationally and internationally. In 1949, he established the first formal anesthesiology training program at Philippine General Hospital and later became one of the first Filipino leaders to hold a major position within the World Federation of Societies of Anesthesiologists.
His dedication to education, innovation, and mentorship helped expand anesthesia training across Asia and continues to leave a lasting impact on the specialty today.

She studied in the bleachers. Her daughter was watching.
In the 1990s, USAP-Maryland Platform Chief Laurie Meginnis was taking nursing classes one or two at a time, textbooks open on her lap while her kids played volleyball. She wasn't just building a career. She was showing her daughter what was possible.
Nearly 30 years later, both Laurie and her daughter Kelly Lock are CRNAs at USAP-Maryland. They live 15 minutes apart.
Laurie oversees more than 130 CRNAs across Maryland hospital sites and still steps into the OR herself. Kelly is Site Chief CRNA for the Johns Hopkins Surgery Center series, managing three ASCs and their clinical teams.
Kelly says watching her mother shaped everything. "Seeing my mom become a CRNA — and being able to shadow in the ORs — that merged my desire to be an advanced practice provider with being able to have a family and be present for them."
The influence ran both ways. When Kelly finished CRNA school in 2020, she spotted a leadership opportunity at a USAP site and called her mother: You should look at this place. It's right up your alley. Laurie joined just before Covid hit. "It's the best thing I ever did," she says.
At USAP, both found an organization that matched their values; one that supported clinical staff through the pandemic rather than cutting pay or shifting CRNAs out of their specialty.
When asked what she'd want to say to her daughter, Laurie doesn't overthink it: "Very, very proud of her. She's gone through adversity to get where she is, and she's handled it all very, very well."
This Mother's Day, we're proud to celebrate Laurie, Kelly and all the clinician-parents who lead by example, inside the OR and out.
