📚The Future of Rail 📚
While visiting the University of Illinois - Urbana Champaign, FRA Administrator David Fink, FRA Associate Administrator for Railroad Safety & Chief Safety Officer Karl Alexy, and staff from the FRA Office of Research and Development explored their Research and Innovation Laboratory (RAIL).
While touring RAIL, they saw how advanced testing drives rail safety. Highlights included the Track Loading System testing full-depth, 11-crosstie panels under 100K lb loads, and a 70-foot test track simulating diverse conditions to evaluate composite and concrete crosstie durability.
The GREATEST city on Earth should have the GREATEST train station on Earth 🗽🚊
That’s why @POTUS is making history and making New York City’s Penn Station beautiful again 🇺🇸

🚧Trump Starts ➡️Trump Finishes
Cedar Rapids and Iowa City Railway Company (CRANDIC) is on schedule to complete a new bridge over the Union Pacific Main Line in Cedar Rapids, Iowa this fall. Funded by a $2.9 million FY2019 FRA Consolidated Railroad Infrastructure and Safety and Improvements (CRISI) Grant, the new structure replaces a 58-year-old crossing and will support the local economy by safely carrying over 60,000 rail cars a year.
The results are in for the 2025 Annual Enforcement Report!
Under the Trump Administration, the FRA has reached new milestones:
☑️Conducted more than 70,000 inspections ☑️Issued over $21 million in civil penalties

Safety Saturday: School is out for summer, but safety never takes a vacation! Remind children and teens to stay away from train tracks. Trains can arrive quickly and quietly taking up to a mile to stop.
FRA Senior Policy Advisor Rusty Roberts was honored to speak at the 22nd Annual Southwestern Rail Conference, sponsored by Texas Rail Advocates. Short line railroads are integral to the success of the global supply chain and the FRA is continuing to invest in projects that improve the efficiency of our rail infrastructure.
He said, “We have recently issued Notices of Funding Opportunity for our very popular competitive grant programs like CRISI, the Crossing Safety Program, and the newly redefined National Railroad Partnership Program.” Under the Trump Administration, the FRA has made over $12 billion available to invest in safe and efficient rail infrastructure projects.

Sierra Northern Railway (SNR) has made significant rail safety upgrades and FRA Administrator David Fink met with SNR staff to view and learn more about these improvements.
Using over $17 million in an FRA Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements (CRISI) Grant, SNR replaced 90,000 railroad ties and rehabilitated 10 miles of rail. This CRISI Grant also allowed them to make improvements to 10 grade crossings along the Oakdale Branch line. In December 2025, they also completed a project to build five new sidings expanding nearly 7 miles using a Railroad Rehabilitation and Improvement Financing (RRIF) Express loan with the Build America Bureau.
