U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia Ervin J. Massinga’s Statement on Recent Developments in Tigray and Afar: “I am disappointed to see the leadership of the TPLF, that the United States sanctioned earlier this year, make the poor decision to launch a large-scale offensive today. Rejecting dialogue sponsored by the AU under President Obasanjo and engaging in an unwinnable fight does nothing for the people. Other armed groups would be wise to avoid this. While the U.S. has tools to sanction additional leaders who try to push Ethiopia down the wrong path, I still believe a reasonable political dialogue is the right way to go.”

Life-saving, U.S.-funded humanitarian aid must reach IDPs in the Tigray Region and throughout Ethiopia. Climatic conditions threaten even more vulnerable populations, making our assistance, coupled with assistance provided by the Ethiopian government, essential in the coming months. All parties must commit to that principle.
The U.S. Government condemns the recent drone strike on a @CatholicRelief humanitarian assistance convoy in Tigray. We urge authorities to conduct a full investigation and share findings to prevent any such incidents occurring again. Parties should immediately engage in dialogue to resolve political differences peacefully.

Two days, 120 alumni, one clear message: Ethiopia's exchange alumni are ready to do business. The Freedom 250 Alumni Summit closed today in Addis Ababa with concrete 90-day action plans across agribusiness, technology, higher education, and digital health — built under the guidance of facilitator Dr. Walter McCollum.
Chargé d'Affaires Catherine Rodriguez capped the Summit by presenting the inaugural Alumni Impact Award to three recipients honored for engaging the alumni network, driving lasting impact from their exchange programs, and growing local businesses that strengthen commercial ties to the United States.
"As alumni, you bring deep knowledge of the Ethiopian market, trusted professional networks, and the ability to connect local opportunities with American businesses and institutions," Rodriguez said. "Now comes the most important part: implementation."
Regional alumni chapters will hold monthly check-ins over the next three months to keep these plans on track.
Thank you to our @USalumnieth, U.S. companies, @AmChamEthiopia, @EthioInvestment, the Addis Ababa Chamber of Commerce, and @ESXEthiopia for two days that turned connections into commitments. https://t.co/alWJ4t3U0J

Ethiopia and the United States mean business. On September 15, the U.S. Embassy convened 120 Ethiopian alumni of U.S. exchange programs alongside @AmChamEthiopia, @EthioInvestment, and U.S. company leaders for Day One of the #Freedom250 Alumni Summit. The focus of the summit, “Connecting Alumni, Growing U.S. Business Partnerships,” signaled a direct push to empower exchange alumni as commercial bridges between Ethiopia and the United States.
State Department’s Assistant Secretary @ECA_AS headlined Day One with a video message affirming President Trump’s support for the efforts of the 6,000+ member alumni network to advance U.S.-Ethiopia commercial ties.
The opening panel didn't hold back. Habtamu Belay (Ethiopian Investment Commission), Bernadette Stewart (U.S. Commercial Service), and Berhane Demissie (AmCham Ethiopia) tackled the real barriers to U.S.-Ethiopia trade, with one panelist naming the "unpriceable" cost of policy unpredictability as the single biggest obstacle facing investors today. Wintana Kidane of the Ethiopian Securities Exchange added her voice to the day's keynotes.
Alumni also heard from KassahunMamo (Addis Ababa Chamber of Commerce), @SolomonMKassa, Omer Bomba Mohammed, and Theo Theoharis, with Dr. Walter McCollum facilitating the day's discussions on positioning alumni as trusted advisors to U.S. companies.
Opening the Summit, Acting Deputy Chief of Mission Adrienne Nutzman put it plainly: "Our exchange alumni are more than program graduates. You are leaders, entrepreneurs, and trusted voices who understand both the Ethiopian market and the United States. And you are uniquely positioned to connect the two." @USalumnieth@StateIVLP
