The U.S. Embassy joins Latvia in mourning the passing of Marģers Vestermanis, Holocaust survivor, historian, and founder of the Museum “Jews in Latvia.” Through his testimony, scholarship, and lifelong dedication, he preserved Latvia’s Jewish history and helped ensure the Holocaust is never forgotten. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.

A bipartisan delegation of U.S. Members of Congress spent the day in Riga meeting Latvian leaders and learning more about the history behind Latvia’s enduring commitment to freedom. 🇺🇸🇱🇻

Led by Congressman Ken Calvert, Chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense, the delegation met with Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs, Minister of Defense Raivis Melnis, Foreign Minister Baiba Braže, and senior members of the Saeima to discuss the strong U.S.-Latvia defense relationship and the military, political, and economic issues shaping regional security. At the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia, Members also reflected on the history that continues to shape Latvia’s resilience and commitment to freedom. #USLatvia #StrongerTogether

If you find yourself walking by the U.S. Embassy in Rīga, you may not know the history behind our address. The Embassy stands on a street named in honor of Sumner Welles, who, as Acting Secretary of State, played an important role in the U.S.-Latvia relationship.

On this day in 1940, the United States issued what is now known as the Welles Declaration, rejecting the legitimacy of the Soviet occupation of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Its principles reflected an enduring U.S. commitment to Baltic sovereignty. Today, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania are strong Allies advancing security, freedom, and self-determination across the region.

U.S. Army Soldiers recently conducted aerial gunnery weapons qualification near Lielvārde Air Base, #Latvia. The training included aerial gunnery weapons qualification, strengthening communication and reaction time, and crew coordination while operating in a dynamic aviation environment.

@VCorps is the @USArmy's only forward-deployed corps, serving as the senior tactical headquarters for Army forces in Eastern Europe to deter conflict and provide combat-ready forces alongside NATO Allies. V Corps is operationalizing and expanding the Eastern Flank Deterrence Initiative with Allies, rapidly integrating emerging technologies into training and tactical plans. 🇱🇻🇺🇸 #StrongerTogether #USLatvia #WeAreNATO

Near Miami, Florida, Latvian-American Edvards Liedskalniņš spent nearly three decades building #CoralCastle from more than 1,000 tons of coral rock. What does deterrence sound like❓

@NATO’s deterrence rests on a mix of nuclear, conventional, and missile defense capabilities, complemented by space and cyber assets. We remain fully committed to maintaining our combat advantage – a commitment that 32 NATO leaders reaffirmed at the #NATOSummit in Ankara.

Our troops underscore this every day on the front lines. As seen during exercise Ramstein Flag 26 in 🇫🇮Finland, the F-35B's takeoff sounds like deterrence. It strengthens interoperability with NATO Allies and reinforces our ability to project combat power.

For more than 30 years, the @MINationalGuard and Latvian National Guard @zemessardze_LV have trained side by side. This summer, their engineers joined Danish forces at Sēlija Military Training Ground to build defensive training areas that strengthen allied readiness and NATO’s eastern flank. 🇺🇸🇱🇻
