1. Protecting Carrick. He brought that up himself. It’s talked about, Carrick’s days are running out.
2. Why did he say it? His tenure at the club is probably over after this season. He got nothing to lose.

I honestly feel like the talk about him just trying to deflect blame, is a bit distasteful. Many don’t like him — fine. But he has never even remotely come across as someone who doesn’t take responsibility or shy away from blame.
