According to the NBS, capital importation into Nigeria rose sharply by +83.8% YoY to USD10.4bn in Q1:2026, driven mainly by stronger investor confidence and improved FX market liquidity.
Most of the inflows came through portfolio investments, particularly money market instruments and bonds, showing continued foreign investor preference for fixed-income assets over equities.
Looking ahead, capital inflows are expected to remain strong due to attractive fixed-income yields.
However, the dominance of short-term portfolio flows means Nigeria remains vulnerable to shifts in global investor sentiment and FX market volatility.

The Federal Government has approved the commencement of Nigeria's 2026 oil and gas licensing round following the ongoing 2025 exercise.
While the licensing round will not immediately increase oil output, it could boost near-term investment activity and support FX inflows since licensing payments are typically made in foreign currency.
Over the medium to long term, successful block awards could attract fresh capital, expand production capacity, strengthen FX earnings, and improve government revenues.

Nigeria’s equities market is set for a major operational shift following the planned transition to a T+1 settlement cycle effective June 1, 2026.
Under the new framework, equity transactions executed on the Nigerian Exchange will settle one business day after execution, compared to the current two-day timeline.
The move marks an important step in modernising Nigeria’s post-trade infrastructure and brings the domestic market closer to evolving global settlement standards already adopted in several advanced markets.
The transition is expected to improve market efficiency by reducing the time capital remain tied up after transactions. Faster settlement means investors can access cash and securities more quickly, enabling quicker portfolio rebalancing and reinvestment.
The reform could be particularly beneficial for institutional and foreign investors, as shorter settlement timeline reduces counterparty and settlement risks while improving capital mobility.
Over time, this may support stronger market participation and deeper liquidity in the equities market.
While some implementation challenges may emerge in the early stages as participants adjust to the faster timeline, the medium-term outlook remains positive. We believe a shorter settlement cycle should improve market efficiency, lower transaction risk, strengthen investor confidence, and enhance the competitiveness of Nigeria’s capital market within the global investment space.

Nigeria’s economy grew by 3.9% YoY in Q1:2026, up from 3.1% in Q1:2025, marking the strongest first-quarter performance since 2015.
Growth was driven by the non-oil sector (+3.9%), with strong contributions from telecommunications, construction, crop production, real estate, and trade.
The oil sector also expanded by 2.6% despite lower crude production, which fell to 1.5mbpd from 1.6mbpd last year.

In the Eurozone, inflation accelerated to 3.0% YoY in April 2026 from 2.6% in March, moving further above the ECB's 2.0% target and largely driven by a 10.8% YoY surge in energy prices. However, core inflation eased slightly to 2.2% from 2.3%.
With the still elevated crude oil prices and expectations of sustained near term pressure due to persistent geopolitical tension, inflationary pressure could persist despite the lower core inflation readings. Hence, keeping inflation above the ECB's 2.00% target for longer.
