On Founder’s Day, UVA has a tradition of planting a tree to honor those who have made significant and lasting contributions to the Grounds.

Dick Minturn, who retired from the University in 2024 and died in 2025, had been a @UVAFM project manager and then a senior academic facility planner in the provost’s office at the University. A legacy sugar maple tree was planted outside one of his favorite places, @UVALibrary.

One of Facilities Management's longest-serving employees, John Sauer, will retire this May after 50 years with the Landscape department. Sauer has worked all over Grounds — from serving as gardener of the president's home at Carr's Hill to Brown College.

Today, we celebrate Founder’s Day, marking the 282nd anniversary of Thomas Jefferson’s birth on April 13, 1743. Jefferson, who authored the Declaration of Independence and who was the nation’s third president, founded UVA in 1819.
