Our project is a finalist in the City of Victoria's Participatory Budgeting Program!! 🙌🏼 Take a few minutes before Nov. 6th to cast your vote for "Being Together and Being Here." #yyj
We are shocked and deeply disappointed at this news. During a pandemic, we must uphold our commitments to protecting the rights of refugees and vulnerable migrants. This includes our fundamental legal obligation to not turn refugees away at the borders. #WelcomeRefugees
3/ Clearly, students want the Student Refugee Program on this campus. When we talked to students, we got such a great response.
Refugees are welcome here.
1/ Thank you to everyone that has supported the referendum. Thank you to the 1,747 undergraduate students and 116 grad students that voted yes, and thank you our team for their tireless campaigning.
2/ Although 68% of voters were in favour of our referendum, we did not meet quorum by 155 ballots. The good news is that our GSS referendum passed with 77% yes votes, which will allow us to increase the funding sponsored students receive.
*TODAY* until Friday (at noon), you can VOTE YES to support the @uvic Student Refugee Program! 🙌🏼 Voting takes just a few seconds at https://t.co/nE6dwmcKTe. 💙📚 #EducationIsARight#uvic#uvss#uvsselections
Every year WUSC sponsors three students on a one-year sponsorship, helping them with rent and tuition costs. By increasing the funds they could sponsor an additional student, and have more resources for the current students in the program.
Next up Al-Musawi, proponent of the WUSC referendum, clarifies the student refugee program — saying they help students learn in new countries, specifically by sponsoring students coming to Canada so they can learn at universities here.
Tuqa Al-Mosawi wants to increase the student fee levy for the World University Service of Canada Student Refugee Program that brought her to Canada.
