Founded in 1996, the Center’s primary mission is to probe the nature and prospects of liberal democracy and its core principles, practices, and institutions.
The founding of CSLD is rooted in the Committee for Academic Freedom and Rights, which emphasized protection of free speech on campus. The committee most notably abolished the faculty speech code in 1999. The center strives to advocate for intellectual diversity on campus.
