It was an immense honour to take part in the October excavations at the Fort of Júviles (Granada), with Memolab and the University of Granada.
A demanding mountain site, where structures and landscape speak to the depth of time 🫶🏼✨

@Alpine_Joy@ghostofhellas@archaeologyart The potter and painter weren’t designing for aesthetic display, but for clarity and symbolism: the standardized shape, the black-figure style, and the central, easily readable image were all meant to highlight what the athlete had won and from which event.
@Alpine_Joy@ghostofhellas@archaeologyart And if you were referring to the shape of the vase itself : that’s simply the traditional form of Panathenaic amphorae. They weren’t created as ‘art objects’ but as functional containers, typically filled with olive oil awarded to victors of the Panathenaic Games.
@Alpine_Joy@ghostofhellas@archaeologyart That said, narrow supports follow the original small feet of Panathenaic amphorae. Mounts are shaped to respect their silhouette, with discreet fixings ensuring stability : it’s a balance of safety, authenticity, and clarity.
@Alpine_Joy@ghostofhellas@archaeologyart If you’re referring specifically to the way the object is perched in this photo, it’s worth noting that this looks like a studio shot, the amphora might not be displayed this way in the actual museum.
@greece_heritage These two alabastra were most likely made in Athens, judging by the quality of the clay and the painting. The one on the left aligns with the Severe Style of the period, while the one on the right seems stylistically close to Eastern figures, reminiscent of the Fikellura style.
@histories_arch Thank you for sharing all these fascinating details about the Boxer with the caestus. I just wanted to add that it was discovered alongside the unique bronze statue of the Hellenistic prince and was part of the Barberini collection.
