Great to be at the @V_and_A this evening to open London Climate Action Week and welcome leaders and climate campaigners from across the world to our city.
Welcoming the Longest Day 🌞
Today marks the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year. For centuries, people have gathered at Stonehenge to celebrate this seasonal turning point, continuing traditions that stretch back thousands of years.
This vibrant crimson dress comes from Lie Sang-Bong’s Spring/Summer 2009 collection, Discourse: Fragments. Inspired by the jogakbo, a traditional Korean wrapping cloth pieced together from leftover fabrics.
Mitchel Maer was a costume jewellery designer who worked for Christian Dior from 1952 to 1956. 🦄
This unicorn brooch set with cut glass stones is a good example of the sort of whimsical, playful jewellery that came into fashion in the post-war years.
#Backrooms but make it V&A 👀
Photographers Bolas & Co. were capturing the V&A's empty corridors and unfinished galleries long before liminal spaces became internet lore.
Worn by Rosalinde Gilbert for her marriage to Arthur Gilbert, this gown was purchased from Schiaparelli’s London salon. Its removable sleeves (now lost) transformed it from a wedding dress into an evening gown.
On what would have been Marilyn Monroe's 100th birthday, we celebrate her enduring legacy. Andy Warhol's iconic portrait, based on a 1953 Niagara publicity photograph by Gene Kornman, transformed her image into a lasting symbol of fame, glamour and modern celebrity culture.
Designed by Cindy Chao, this extraordinary peony brooch brings together 3,150 rubies, eleven years of craftsmanship, and one remarkable feat of engineering and artistry.
Issey Miyake was one of fashion’s great innovators, redefining Paris style in the 1970s–80s. Plastic Body, from his experimental Bodyworks series, used glass fibre and polyester resin to trace the female form, transforming clothing into wearable sculpture.
Eid Mubarak to everyone celebrating Eid al-Adha today!
How did people remember important life achievements before photography?
This colourfully painted tile is a souvenir of the holy pilgrimage to Mecca. Known as the Hajj, Muslim believers are required to perform it once in their lifetime.
Commissioned by someone who completed the Hajj around 1650, this tile shows a bird’s-eye view of Mecca. The stonepaste body was hand-painted and calligraphed before the final glazing, preserving its bright colours, such as cobalt and turquoise blue. All the important buildings are labelled in Arabic, and at the centre of the scene, the Ka‘bah is shown as the square black building.
Get an up-close look at this tile on display at V&A South Kensington Room 42, Islamic Middle East.
Tile, made in Turkey, ca.1650. Museum no. 427-1900.
26 May 1967: The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band went on sale in the UK. Designed by Peter Blake and Jann Haworth, its groundbreaking sleeve fused pop art, celebrity culture and music, becoming one of the most influential album covers ever created.
Flora’s Train 🪻💐
Designed by Victorian artist Walter Crane, each pale blue Art Nouveau tile depicts a woman whose gown matches the flower she stands with.
Cornflower, bluebell, columbine, anemone, poppy and daffodil make the full set.
Commissioned for Observer Colour magazine, this image by Jim Lee captures Yves Saint Laurent gowns in a grand setting inspired by Old Masters and cinema. Printed by Martin Clark, it balances fashion, movement and narrative as both portrait and performance.
Bee-inspired brilliance 🐝
In 1960s London, jeweller John Donald redefined jewellery with sculptural, art-led designs. This honeycomb brooch-pendant used lost-wax casting: a real honeycomb melted away to create a cavity for molten gold, turning nature into wearable art.

The Embassy was invited to the @V_and_A to view "Rising Voices: Contemporary Art from Asia, Australia and the Pacific," which features the prominent Japanese installation: Reflection Model (Perfect Bliss) by Takahiro Iwasaki.
The sculpture is a miniature version of Kyoto’s Phoenix Pavilion - Byōdō-in temple. While the building is a national icon, celebrated on both the 10-yen coin and 10,000-yen note, Iwasaki’s work physically captures its reflection as a suspended, three-dimensional object. This dreamlike doubling invites a new look at the building’s architectural and cultural significance.
The exhibition also features contemporary regional art works by over 40 pioneering creatives from the Asia Pacific region.
Have you been to the Byōdō-in temple in Uji? Let us know in the comments!

Not to be outdone by her famous father, William Morris, May Morris was a talented designer in her own right, whose work is said to have been occasionally misattributed to her father.
