CEO @BHERCanada. Great team, great members. Building opportunity through collaboration. Thankful for every day. Even the tough ones. #skills#innovation#talent
"All courses of action are risky, so prudence is not in avoiding danger (it's impossible), but calculating risk & acting decisively. Make mistakes of ambition & not mistakes of sloth. Develop the strength to do bold things, not the strength to suffer." - Niccolo Machiavelli
@MKMcKean@CommishAACU@BHERCanada@jason_czyz Closing thoughts: From Sandrine Belloc: Successful partnerships between HE and companies take hard work. From @CommishAACU: this is a wonderful time for HE. From @jason_czyz & @MKMcKean: In person dialogue and collaboration are necessary to solve our biggest societal challenges.
@MKMcKean@CommishAACU@BHERCanada Really hard to hear how much demand there is right now for @jason_czyz’s Institute of International Education’s refugee programs. A stat yesterday that blew my mind: average duration of a stay in refugee camps is 17 years. Just terrible. #GICBerlin23
@mattsigelman goes on to talk about the increasing importance of core skills in an age of generative AI. BUT, the number of skills he considers “core” is going up!
Next session @ciee_news is a GIC Talk by @mattsigelman @BrningGlsInst. Skills & work are changing and evolving in profound ways. (Not new). But he’s got data showing that jobs are blending skills from across domains, which makes training for them way more difficult. #GICBerlin23
@camcstockdale@AlexUsherHESA Our data come from *students* telling us they aren’t as concerned about having a #WIL experience when the labour market is strong. They’re the ones making direct connections between WIL and jobs. No argument WIL is many things.
Her response: 3 big things students are craving as they come out of the pandemic: 1. A career, 2. They want to have impact and be change makers, and 3. They’re looking for belonging and a sense of community. #GICBerlin23
I asked @connie about her lesson 2 “demand is through the roof” [for coop]. @BHERCanada#WIL programs have high demand BUT student interviews tell us they don’t see it *as* necessary given the tight labour market right now.
@AlexUsherHESA Especially if they could line up all the employers who would say, as we’re hearing more and more, that they’ll teach the technical skills. They just need people with the skills in column 2.
