You can reduce the danger, you can limit their opportunities, but stopping all three for ninety minutes is almost impossible. That’s why France are one of the favourites to win this World Cup. When you have attackers of that level working together, every attack feels like it could end in a goal.

We tried everything—different defensive shapes, pressing at certain moments, sitting deeper at others—but against players with this much pace, intelligence and technical quality, one mistake is enough. That’s the level they operate at. They don’t need five chances. They only need one.”
