I keep thinking about the way Valko nuzzles MC. This is just my interpretation, not fact! ❤️

At first he looks down at her, looking a little annoyed before he proceeds to nuzzle her head. All the while, hands at his side. He kisses her after. Then he’s satisfied. “There, that’s better.”

First, her back is to a predator. There’s already an established degree of trust between them.

Regarding the look he gives her, I don’t think it’s aimed at her. Wolves identify each other through scent. Every wolf carries an individual signature, and a pack knows its own by smell. So if she doesn’t smell like him, then to his senses, she’s registering as an outsider, which isn’t right in his sensory world. So he corrects this and scents her with his nuzzles.

There’s also the aspect of the Alpha needing to protect its pack. I wonder if scenting her is also his form of protection so outsiders of their pack know she’s under his protection. Reminds me of when they’re in the car, he gives MC the ring and says “Wear it and everyone who pledges their loyalty to me will follow you as well.”

She can also walk away mid-nuzzle and reject him if she wants. He’s not holding her to this. I really love the detail of his arms by his sides when he does this. It keeps her free, despite his need to claim her as his. Her freedom is still very important to him, above all else. At least in *this* moment.

When he scents her, and then realises she hasn’t walked away, his eyes get much tender. She’s accepting his closeness to her. Then he smells her again, smiles, kisses her and then gently rests his head on her. This moment has been living in my head rent free for weeks now. It’s like, “Now everything is better; everything makes sense again. She’s part of me.”
