Congratulations to Staff Sergeant Darin McDougall of the Emergency Response Section on receiving a Superintendent’s Commendation for demonstrating exemplary professionalism in arresting an alleged carjacker. Staff Sergeant McDougall was off-duty when he witnessed one man punching a driver in what he thought might be a “road rage” situation. While calling 911, he followed the driver to check on his well-being, but the vehicle quickly sped off out of sight. Within moments, Staff Sergeant McDougall came across the vehicle on its roof after a rollover crash which shut down a major intersection. He learned that the driver had stolen the vehicle and saw him trying to flee the scene. He stepped in and helped arrest the suspect along with a responding #VPD sergeant. Thankfully, no one was seriously injured. #VPD #ServiceBeforeSelf #PublicSafety
#VPDNews: Crown Counsel has approved a charge of assault with a weapon after a man allegedly struck a woman on the head with a large piece of wood at Kits Beach.
On June 28, just before 2:00 p.m., the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) received several 911 calls after witnesses reported seeing a man pick up a piece of wood and strike an apparently unsuspecting woman on the head. She was walking along the beach with her partner when the stranger allegedly struck from behind.
Witnesses described the weapon as a piece of lumber or driftwood about the size and thickness of a baseball bat.
The woman’s companion intervened, and several witnesses came to assist. Other witnesses followed the suspect and called 911.
Minutes after the incident, Vancouver Police arrested Carlos Caldera Duarte inside a dollar store near the beach. The victim, who was bleeding from the head and slipping in and out of consciousness, was taken to hospital for treatment. She is expected to recover.
Carlos Caldera Duarte has been charged with one count of assault with a weapon.
“This appears to be an unprovoked assault in a busy public place,” said Sgt. Adam Donaldson of the Vancouver Police Department. “We’re grateful to the witnesses who intervened, followed the suspect, and provided critical information to police.”
Officers on foot patrol in and around the Downtown Eastside last week were able to recover three stolen bikes in three separate incidents in just one day.
On June 25, constables found a man taking bikes apart on the sidewalk in the 100-block of East Hastings. When they checked the serial number of one of the bikes, they discovered it had been stolen just hours earlier. The owner was notified and officers did their best to put the bike back together for them.
The same day, police were called by a North Vancouver man who had been searching for his stolen $11,000 Ghost mountain bike for a week. He had just seen a man riding it near BC Place. Officers arrested the suspect before he could flee, and returned the unique bike to its owner. The investigation continues.
Later, patrolling members on foot in the 500-block of Main noticed a high-end $10,000 E-bike locked to a bike rack. Police queried the bike’s serial number and determined it was stolen from Yaletown the week prior. The bike’s rightful owner was notified and his bike was returned to him.
“We always encourage people to know their serial numbers and report their stolen bikes,” says Sergeant Adam Donaldson. “If we encounter a suspicious person with a bike, it can help us prove the bike is stolen and that it belongs to you.”
The Vancouver Police also recommend bike owners register their bikes with Project 529, which can increase the chance of getting a bike back if it’s stolen.

#VPDNews: A 40-year-old man arrested for suspected drug trafficking on Commercial Drive June 23 and released from custody on an undertaking to appear, was re-arrested June 24 for assaulting another man in the Downtown Eastside.
Vancouver Police on routine patrol in the 100-block of East Hastings witnessed the suspect put another man in a headlock and punch him in the head. The suspect was arrested after a brief struggle.
He was searched and officers found he was carrying two bags of suspected crystal meth, two bags of suspected fentanyl, and three throwing-star knives.
The victim walked away from the scene and has not been found.
The suspect was taken to jail, the drugs and knives were seized, and drug samples have been sent for analysis. The man was released from custody June 25 on condition he report to a bail supervisor, not possess weapons, knives or drug paraphernalia, and not to be in an area bound by Columbia, Pender, Carrall, and Cordova streets.
On June 29, 1966, #VPD Constable Larry Esau was riding his police motorcycle on patrol when the driver of a vehicle struck and killed him.
