📖 The Making of a Frontier (1899). The map on the left is Durand's original map as published in the book. The map on the right reconstructs the entire route as followed by Col Algernon Durand to Gilgit.

Today Gilgit is accesible via the Karakoram Highway and Babusar Pass. In 1888, the the route was from Rawalpindi to Gilgit via Kashmir.

The expedition involved traversing high mountain passes on horseback, crossings by boats and rafts and negotiating rope bridges over roaring torrents.
