Inside the Historical Museum of the Sughd Region, housed within the reconstructed Khujand Fortress (the ancient Alexandria Eschate), visitors are welcomed by a spectacular series of modern marble mosaics illustrating the life and campaigns of Alexander the Great. #archaeologytravel #tajikistan 🇹🇯

The mosaics were created using thousands of fragments of coloured marble and local stone from the Badakhshan and Sughd mountains, combining traditional mosaic techniques with a distinctly Central Asian artistic style. Rather than reproducing ancient Greek works, they present a monumental visual narrative celebrating Alexander’s arrival in Sogdiana and the foundation of Alexandria Eschate (“Alexandria the Furthest”), the city that became modern Khujand.

The panels depict the major episodes of Alexander’s eastern campaign, including his crossing into Central Asia, the siege and capture of Cyropolis, the storming of Alexandria Eschate, battles against the Sogdians and Scythians along the Jaxartes (Syr Darya), and the establishment of his northernmost city. Dynamic battle scenes show Macedonian cavalry charging Persian and Sogdian warriors, while other compositions portray Alexander as both conqueror and city founder.

Although these mosaics are modern works of art rather than ancient archaeological finds, they provide a vivid introduction to one of the most important chapters in the history of Central Asia. They remind visitors that Khujand marked the northeastern limit of Alexander’s empire and served as the base from which he secured Sogdiana before advancing deeper into Central Asia. Set within the ancient fortress overlooking the Syr Darya, the mosaics effectively connect the city’s archaeological heritage with the dramatic events of 329 BC, when Alexander established the easternmost of his many Alexandrias.

The mosaics were created for the new Historical Museum of Sughd, which was built inside the reconstructed Khujand Fortress between 2003 and 2006 and opened to the public in March 2007 for the city’s 2,520th anniversary.
