Roblox stock is crashing and they say the lack of new viral games is one of the main reasons.
The company’s shares have fallen by around 70% over the past year, wiping roughly $70 billion off Roblox’s market value.
“We attribute the unforeseen monetization shortfall to a greater-than-expected shift of engagement from high monetizing 2025 vintage viral games to a combination of new and evergreen experiences with lower hourly monetization,”
🦔Spotify reported Q2 today. 777 million total users, 300 million paid subscribers, and the stock closed down 8%. Co-CEO Gustav Söderström told the earnings call that "being an AI beneficiary means winning on the cost side too." Spotify is launching an AI-generated remix tool with Universal Music and Merlin as a paid add-on, an AI chatbot called "Talk to Spotify" for premium users, and adding more ads and friction to the free tier to push people toward paid.
My Take
Spotify pays artists out of a limited royalty pool. Pushing AI-generated tracks into that same pool means the platform keeps a bigger share of every stream while artists take home less. Subscriber growth was solid this quarter, but the stock still fell 8%, so investors are skeptical too. The company is asking listeners to pay more for AI features while making the free tier more annoying to use, which is a lot to ask of subscribers who are already choosing between four or five streaming services.
AI-generated content costs a fraction of licensed content, so every streaming platform has a reason to push it. Spotify's version is to charge extra for AI tools and make the free tier worse until people upgrade. If subscribers accept it, this becomes the template for how Netflix, YouTube, and every other subscription service rolls out AI features. If enough people leave for Qobuz or Apple Music, Spotify has spent heavily on features that didn't retain their audience while damaging the trust with artists that built the platform. Q2 numbers show the strategy is fully in motion. Whether it works depends on how much friction users tolerate before they walk.

🦔Mexico's largest university just threw out 58,000 exam results after AI-supervised remote testing produced a 5x surge in top scores. Between 2021 and 2025, only 3.5% of applicants scored 100 or above on the 120-question test. This year, 16.3% did. Almost half of remote test-takers may have received help. Territorium's AI proctoring and Respondus's lockdown browser could not stop it. Everyone retakes the test in person.
My Take
Everyone in this chain had a reason to go along with a product that didn't work. Students who leaned on ChatGPT during their studies had no way to suddenly build the skill for an entrance exam, so they used the same tools during the test. Schools adopted AI proctoring because it costs less than in-person exams at scale. The vendors sold software that lets institutions claim they had oversight, and the institutions paid for it. The 5x jump in top scores followed directly from that setup.
The market for AI supervision software is much larger than one university in Mexico. Companies buy AI detection, AI moderation, AI compliance, and AI oversight because human judgment costs many times more, and the failures usually stay quiet enough that no one has to fix them publicly. UNAM had 58,000 admissions on the line, so the failure couldn't stay quiet. Most enterprise buyers of these products will never face that kind of accountability, and the category continues to grow because they don't have to.
