“Think about what we are asking of this state.

We are asking for bodies.

We say to this state:

Those whom you have killed…
their decomposed bodies,
their remains,
their bones…

just give them back to us.

We say:

Those you kill,
those whose bodies can no longer be identified,

just tell us who they are,
so that we may know whose body it is.

Whenever an unidentified body is found,
all of Balochistan falls into mourning.

In every home,
the same pain rises:

Is this my son?
Is this my brother?

I remember many times when unidentified bodies were found.

I have seen my own sister,
my own family members,
zooming into those photographs.

My father has a mark above his nose.

They would zoom in,
searching for that mark.

Looking closer,
and closer still.

Wondering whether it was there.

Wondering whether, somehow,
that body resembled my father.

That is why they kept zooming in.

Searching for a trace of the man they loved.”
