The Centre of Excellence for Road Safety (CoERS), IIT Madras, in collaboration with the Department of Highways and Minor Ports, Government of Tamil Nadu, conducted a Training Programme on Human Factors-Based Road Safety Audit under the Data-Driven Hyperlocal Interventions (DDHI) programme.
Highway engineers and road safety field officers from across Tamil Nadu received hands-on training in identifying road safety hazards, understanding road user behaviour, and conducting structured audits using digital tools developed by CoERS.
A key highlight was the release of the High Frequency Accident Zones (HFAZs) – Tamil Nadu Road Safety Status Report 2025, which provides valuable insights to support targeted, evidence-based road safety interventions across the state.

As road safety remains a critical challenge, building capacity within stakeholder Departments in each State is essential. This training for highway engineers of the Department of Highways and Minor Ports, Govt. of Tamil Nadu, is a step in that direction.
We hope the collaboration will further enable the use of digital tools to identify targeted actions and strengthen road safety across Tamil Nadu.
Tamil Nadu faces a serious road safety challenge. As per MoRTH’s 2024 report, the state recorded 67,526 accidents-nearly 14% of the country’s total crashes.
Addressing this requires building capacity among highway engineers & officers to identify and implement targeted measures.
The Centre of Excellence for Road Safety (CoERS), IIT Madras, in collaboration with the Directorate of Transport, Government of Goa, conducted a Capacity-Building Workshop on the Data-Driven Hyperlocal Intervention (DDHI) Programme in Panjim, Goa.
Bringing together nearly 200 officials from the Police, Transport, and Health Departments, the workshop provided hands-on training in data-driven tools and methodologies to identify and address road safety risks at the hyperlocal level.
Developed by CoERS, the DDHI programme follows a train-and-transfer model that enables states to build sustainable road safety systems, strengthen institutional capacity, and implement evidence-based interventions to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities.

We are proud to announce the grant of our patent on Speed Calming Assemblies (SCA) — a dynamic traffic calming innovation designed to address overspeeding on Indian roads.
Unlike conventional speed breakers, the device features an adjustable bump strip mechanism that can be repositioned horizontally on the road without dismantling the base unit, enabling variable speed reduction to suit different traffic conditions.
The SCA consists of a base unit and bump strips secured by a DL Locker and V-Clamp system, and can be extended in the longitudinal direction for greater flexibility.
Suitable for all road types, it functions both as a speed pacification device and an alerting mechanism for road users during day and night.
