Bloomberg keeps pouring cold water unto AirAsia's Tony Fernandes.

First, Bloomberg attributes to his recent trumpet solo...

"AirAsia Group Bhd’s (KL:AAGB) Tan Sri Tony Fernandes is fed up with private credit and the exorbitant interest rate they charge.

“I don’t want to take any more private credit debt because it’s expensive,” the co-founder of one of the biggest Southeast Asian budget carriers said at a briefing last week. “I don’t want more debt. I don’t like debt.”

Then comes the sting...

While Fernandes is seeking to reduce interest payments — some as high as 11% — through a US$1 billion (RM4.09 billion) refinancing package, it may be tough for a company that sells cheap flight tickets to make money when oil prices are above US$100 a barrel.

"AirAsia’s finances are so strained that it loses money, has more liabilities than assets, and has a cash-to-revenue ratio that’s well below the industry standard.

“AirAsia likely needs either a real improvement in operating cash flow or credit enhancement,” said Linus Benjamin Bauer, founder of aviation consultancy BAA & Partners. “Without that, cheaper money is difficult to justify.”

"Like most airlines, the Iran war hit AirAsia hard but the carrier, which doesn’t hedge its fuel costs, has been grappling with soaring prices to such extent that it went through two straight quarterly losses."

And then Bloomberg recounts AirAsia's spreadsheet...

1) AirAsia's total debt had surged to a record US$4.1 billion at the end of June, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

2) While the jump largely reflected Fernandes’ consolidation of all its airline businesses into AirAsia from sister firm Capital A Bhd (KL:CAPITALA), AirAsia’s liabilities exceeded assets by RM606 million as of end-June, according to the company’s first-half financial report.

3) It also shows it had RM954 million in cash and RM18.4 billion in current liabilities due over the next 12 months, suggesting coverage of only 5%.

4) The cash represents 4.3% of AirAsia’s annualized revenue of RM22 billion and “normal airline practice is to have cash and facilities of at least 10%-20% of annualized revenue”, said independent aviation analyst Andrew Light.

Hence the headline of today's (September 24) story:

They then "buy" tickets from AirAsia X to fulfill this. At what price? Only insiders know.

So you can think about AirAsia X as the cost center.

The 5 businesses making money, the one losing money (the airline) they throw it for some loser to pick it up.

That loser, might turn out to be MAG or Batik or Malaysian government.

September 4: The bond between PM Anwar and Deputy PM Ahmad Zahid said to vastly deteriorate.

Bloomberg: Relations between Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and his ruling alliance partner Zahid Hamidi have deteriorated in recent weeks, according to people familiar with the matter.

They were barely seen talking to each other during Cabinet meeting.

In fact, Bloomberg sources noted that the relationship is now so bad that the last few cabinet meetings have been shorter than usual.

This is how Bloomberg had framed the story:

"The past few days have seen the two men engage in a fight through proxies, with ministries overseen by the two leaders becoming embroiled in an angry dispute over funding.

“The relationship may deteriorate further so he may need to do a headcount to see if he has parliamentary support for reform and, more importantly, the 2027 budget,” said Adib Zalkapli, founder of Viewfinder Global Affairs, a geopolitical risk consultancy.

"Anwar is due to table the next national budget on Oct 9, and is under pressure from his coalition’s Democratic Action Party to pass legislative reforms by the end of the year.

"While the coalition has enough votes to survive and pass a budget without Zahid, his support would be needed to deliver the supermajority required for legislative reforms like a term limit for the prime minister."
