I won't call you stupid like some of the others. I do think you're right and wrong. I disagree with you wholeheartedly but some of your concerns are valid. There is a difference, a difference in scale and sheer hardware requirement and it's hurting other areas of the tech sector just to build out the hardware needed to fill racks in these datacenters and it's probably going to get worse before it gets better. There are solutions to all of these things. Production will scale up eventually for hardware. Construction can be done responsibly.
The benefits are too big to ignore, and the penalty for not doing it are too high. It's an economic issue, a social issue and a foreign policy issue all rolled into one.
There's the China angle, the west needs to at least have parity if not dominance for all the implications AI has to cybersecurity, the potential for autonomous warfare, and more. Just because these things might be distasteful doesn't mean we get to ignore them.
The benefits are too numerous to fully list but here are a few.
Medical research, even if you just look at protein folding, which has been a notoriously difficult problem for computers using traditional algorithms. There's the cancer research angle, personalized medicine and more. Jacobian conjecture
Math, if you think AI won't help substantively solve mathematics problems, that's just not true.

AI can process huge quantities of date intelligently finding things no human could with a simple algorithm.
AI can check code, help write it (with currently mixed results), and is very good at penetration testing and finding exploits in software. If ours can't figure out how to exploit chinese software but theirs can exploit western software, that's a huge risk.
As for the creatives, well I didn't use AI to write this and it's pretty limited there right now. ( I think creativity should remain a mostly human endeavor if I'm being honest, but perhaps it can provide help and take out mundane or tedious tasks, or be used as a tool. Such as smart background selection in photo editing already is ) Images and videos directly made by AI can be problematic, especially with regards to impersonation, criminal activity and propaganda.
All that said, even if you fully believe the negatives of AI outweigh the benefits, you cannot put the cat back in the bag, you can't kill the cat, you either keep it or ignore it. Ignoring the other guy's cat might not be so easy...this was a bad way to go with the turn of phrase.
The other big aspect is economics, AI is already so intertwined with the economic systems of the world that if the companies just vanished it would be terrible for everyone. We need to hope by and large the succeed even if they don't benefit us super directly because if they fail catastrophically we all lose.

For the datacenter thing then it's pretty simple, we need them. There's plenty of land and Elon wants to put them in space. Now I was much more skeptical of the datacenters in space thing at first upon hearing them purely from a heat rejection standpoint. But I've read what is out there, what they are saying easy...this was a bad way to go with the turn of phrase.and it does look like it could end up being promising. Though I don't oppose more terrestrial variety of datacenter projects either, in the end we may need both. It's a complex problem, but mostly one of engineering at this point, as in it is solveable.
People don't want data centers that's fine. Then they have to get rid of Uber, Tesla FSD, Netflix, cell phones, the Internet, their ERP system at work, online banking, cures for cancer, etc., etc., etc.
Atomophobia is a real problem, yes it's not as bad now as when I was young, but people really need to get over these fears. Fearing the safest industry in human history is just silly.
Nuclear needs to come bag in a big way, but this admin has done more for nuclear than any admin since the 60s. SMRs for the army, changed the ALARA and LNT shit, got 5 reactors opened/reopened, pushing for both fission and fusion and the relaxing of regs to make them possible. Nuclear cargoships by 2028. Nuclear is the best and Atomophobia needs to end. Atomophobia has led to huge environmental setbacks, economic hits, energy security hits and more. Imagine how much bigger the American economy would be than it already is if we never stepped away from nuclear and left it behind for 30-40 years. Imagine if we already had SMRs, Molten Salt Reactors, Nuclear Cargo ships. All of this tech is decades upon decades old too, we could have had it.
@jessmbaum This is perhaps the most retarded take I've read yet. Also no one's putting up hyperscale datacenters to mine bitcoin. It's AI infra primarily but basically every other datacenter need will also need to expand.
I mean there are a lot of possible form factors, you could use abandoned military installations, or even caverns, or any other number of things. But wide is cheaper and wide works better than vertical. For one you don't have employees needing to go several stories to replace a bad drive.

There are a handful of legit concerns. Mainly imminent domain when building them at scale, and potentially noise. These aren't issues with datacenters, these are issues with locations. Even if there's a minor inconvenience of having a datacenter in your small town there's infinitely more upsides to you than not. But I don't want to see people lose their land or homes over it either. Not that this is happening by and large, but imminent domain has been used before.
@Onmyrail1 People did oppose industrialization, they opposed a lot of things that ended up being good for them. The thing with tech like this is, you cannot put it back in the bag, end of story, you either adopt at scale and win or you refuse and become irrelevant.
I mean as a gamer I don't like the prices of RAM and other PC components ;-; and there are some uses of it that are not so savory, but overall it's the future. Hate it if you want but that's the truth, there's no going back. And it is legitimately so useful in so many fields. It will revolutionize so many areas like it's already doing in medicine for protein folding or cybersecurity.
you're going to see a huge data center and AI renaissance over the next year. the out-right hatred people have for them is founded on baseless "facts" that just aren't true:
- datacenters do not use much water. your local In-n-out uses more water.
- AI isn't replacing jobs, its creating them.
- data centers pay states a huge some of money in the form of taxes and subsidies which are being fed directly into the local residents pockets in the form of schools, new hospitals, better infrastructure etc
- power/energy bills *aren't* going up as data center's cover the costs. in states where thats not happening that should change soon.
we're talking about the biggest industrial revolution since factories. its imperative we win this.
