@RutgersAltRoute Teachers, parents, admins need to communicate to victims of bullying that they are not alone and that something is being done to stop the bullying that they are experiencing. They need to check in regularly and show they care through actions as well as words
@RutgersAltRoute It is challenging to teach in an environment where bullying and harassment are present. It provides an opportunity to help those students who are suffering from bullying and harassment, and perhaps help bullies see the consequences of their behavior
@RutgersAltRoute Always communicate with colleagues about problematic students. Chances are the student's other teachers see the same behavior. Together you can try to find the root cause or triggers for the behavior. If certain lines are crossed, parent involvement is needed
@RutgersAltRoute Be aware of and pay attention to student relationships, speak to students outside of class about concerning behavior. Inconspicuously separate students who are problematic sitting near each other. Encourage positive group interactions.
@RutgersAltRoute Having regular and consistent classroom procedures, always being aware of what's going on between students, having firm rules in place about student interactions. Students begin the year by signing agreement to respect peers. Seating charts.
@RutgersAltRoute A5: My favorite is Class Dojo, which allows me to communicate efficiently with students' parents, and I can send msg to all parents at once. Parents find it easy to navigate. Some parents prefer to talk by email or via the phone as well, so I try to accomodate #AltRtEd#EdTech
@RutgersAltRoute I tell students and parents to contact me by email, and that I check my email once around 9pm every night but may not respond to every email. I also contact parents if students are missing one major grade or two minor grades, per school policy. #TeacherEd#EdTech
@RutgersAltRoute Technology fixes traditional difficulties in communication. Students can contact teachers at any time for help. This could be seen as a benefit and a challenge, because the speed of communication sometimes places unrealistic and unhealthy demands on teachers. #TeacherEd#EdTech
@RutgersAltRoute I share assignments, rubrics, and lesson plans with other teachers and collaborate with them. Electronic sharing is a great way to facilitate this, and you can even edit each and comment on each other's work. #TeacherEd#EdTech
@RutgersAltRoute When students work in online platforms they are more likely to use informal or "internet" language. The way that I try to overcome this is by always emphasizing formal academic language in my assignment descriptions and rubrics. #TeacherEd#EdTech
@RutgersAltRoute I use a variety of resources to engage students in the learning process, including showing videos, having creative online projects, and having students collaborate in group online work like Google Slides. #TeacherEd#EdTech
