The most valuable part of UPI is the data on high frequency spending patterns, which eventually will go dark in part due to cash. Visa and Mastercard will pick up a larger share of the data and transaction value too. Introducing transaction charges is a subpar policy that firmly undermines national interest. A small upfront cost paid by the state safeguards national data, encourages digitization of payments, and improves accountability. Rather curious that policymakers and politicians choose to be penny wise and pound foolish.
