…I couldn't help sharing this moment with you. It’s another evacuation - unfortunately, a routine one by now. It’s hard to count how many people are leaving on their own or escaping with the help of the police and volunteers from dangerous towns and villages, especially in the Donetsk region. This happens every day.

I love animals very much, and this tame dog, looking just like a plush toy, really touched my soul with its innocent look and frightened eyes. Animals are in a state of shock, and people during the evacuation are in tears. This is Ukraine; this is what war and life look like here.

En 1936, devant les yeux d'Adolf Hitler aux Jeux de Berlin, un jeune homme de 20 ans fend l'eau à une vitesse phénoménale et fait taire tout le stade. Sept ans plus tard, en novembre 1943, il monte dans un wagon à bestiaux direction Auschwitz avec sa femme et leur fillette de deux ans. Ce soir-là, privé de son nom et réduit à un simple numéro gravé dans la chair, personne ne sait encore que cet homme brisé accomplira après l'enfer l'un des plus grands miracles de l'histoire du sport.

Son nom était Alfred Nakache.

Avant la guerre, Alfred est le roi des bassins, l'un des nageurs les plus rapides de la planète et le fierté de toute la France. Mais en 1941, sous l'Occupation, un article de presse le désigne publiquement comme « le Juif Nakache » et exige son bannissement immédiat des compétitions. Par solidarité, d'autres nageurs français refusent de plonger sans lui et se retirent des championnats. Ce geste magnifique ne suffira pas à le protéger de la haine.

Dénoncé, Alfred est arrêté avec les deux êtres qu'il aime plus que tout au monde.

Dès leur arrivée sur la rampe d'Auschwitz, sous un ciel gris et glacial, la sélection sépare la famille en quelques secondes. Alfred est envoyé aux travaux forcés. Sa femme Paule et leur petite Annie, âgée de deux ans à peine, sont exécutées dès le premier jour. Alfred l'ignore et continue d'espérer chaque matin, trouvant la force de survivre dans le seul souvenir de leurs sourires.

Il a perdu sa dignité.
Il a perdu sa femme.
Il a perdu sa petite fille.

Après avoir survécu aux travaux exténuants et aux marches de la mort en plein hiver, il est enfin libéré au camp de Buchenwald. Il n'est plus qu'un squelette vivant, pesant à peine 40 kilos, les yeux creusés par le chagrin lorsqu'il apprend la terrible vérité : il ne reverra plus jamais sa femme et son enfant.

N'importe quel homme se serait laissé mourir.

Mais un peu plus d'un an après sa libération, en 1946, Alfred s'avance au bord d'un bassin. Ses bras sont marqués par les cicatrices, son corps porte les traces de la faim, mais il plonge. Dans l'eau, il ne ressent plus la douleur des camps ni le poids de l'absence. Il bat le record du monde du relais. Deux ans plus tard, aux Jeux Olympiques de Londres en 1948, il est le seul survivant des camps de la mort à s'aligner au départ, nageant non pas pour la gloire ou la vengeance, mais simplement pour se sentir encore vivant.

Alfred a consacré la suite de sa vie à transmettre sa passion aux enfants de Toulouse, leur apprenant à flotter, à respirer, à ne jamais abandonner face au courant.

Un après-midi de 1983, alors qu'il effectuait sa traversée quotidienne dans la mer, son cœur fatigué s'est arrêté. L'eau, qui lui avait tout donné et qui l'avait aidé à traverser le pire, l'a emporté paisiblement.

On croit souvent que le courage consiste à se battre contre les autres, alors qu'il s'agit parfois simplement de trouver une raison de continuer à respirer quand on a tout perdu.

You probably think this dance is ancient Greek. It isn’t.

What Anthony Quinn and Alan Bates are doing on that stretch of Cretan sand in Zorba the Greek looks older than the rocks behind them. Arms on shoulders, feet dragging, then the music lifting and the steps tightening until the whole thing seems to have been passed down for centuries. It wasn’t. The sirtaki — the dance the world now treats as Greece itself — was assembled for a 1964 film.

Giorgos Provias built the choreography from pieces of existing Greek dances: the slow pull of the syrtos, the changing pulse of the hasapiko. Mikis Theodorakis wrote the music that made those steps feel inevitable. Then the cameras rolled on Stavros beach, and two actors finished a story that had already gone badly. A mine collapsed. Plans failed. People were lost. And still they danced.

That is the second surprise. They were not performing a national ritual. One man is Zorba — restless, physical, allergic to theory. The other is Basil, the young writer who thinks too much and moves too little. Zorba does not give him a speech. He puts a hand on his shoulder and starts moving. No lecture. No consolation. Just dance.

There is a smaller, more human accident inside the scene. Quinn had injured his foot late in the shoot. The leaping steps first planned for the sequence were suddenly impossible. So he dragged the injured foot through the sand, and that limitation became the movement everyone remembers. Sometimes a broken thing is what gives a scene its shape.

Watch it again with that in mind and the clip changes. The joy is not triumph. It is not even hope, exactly. It is the decision, after everything has gone wrong, that the body still has something to say. Basil asked to be taught. Zorba laughed, then taught him. The camera stays with them as the rhythm quickens and the two figures, one weathered and one still learning, keep going against the sea.

The rest is aftermath. Tourists would later ask for “the Greek dance.” Tavernas would play the theme until it felt eternal. Greece acquired an image the film had invented on a Tuesday in 1964. But the scene itself is simpler than the myth it created. Two men on a beach. One of them cannot jump. Both of them refuse to stand still.

They were not trying to invent a country. They were trying to stay alive in it. The world joined them later.

Sie würde stattdessen neue Abhängigkeiten schaffen und unser Land ruinieren. Wer raus will aus der EU, wer Deutschland und Bayern abschotten will, der irrt. China calls it “development.” But when Beijing turns Tibet into a laboratory for dams, tunnels, railways, roads and mega infrastructure, we have to ask: development for whom, and at what cost?

The proposed Kyirong–Kathmandu route has already seen 75 drilling sites completed and 90% of soil testing done. Across Tibet, at least 193 hydropower dams have been built or planned since 2000, with the real number potentially exceeding 300. The Lhasa–Nyingchi railway cuts through 47 tunnels and more than 120 bridges across some of the most fragile and geologically complex terrain on Earth.

The CCP keeps pushing deeper into Tibet with little meaningful public scrutiny, while Tibetans have virtually no say over what happens to their land, mountains and rivers.

This is not just about one flood. It is about the consequences of transforming an entire Himalayan ecosystem at unprecedented scale.

When Beijing treats Tibet as a construction zone, who bears the risk?

Tibetans do. The Himalayan environment does. And millions downstream in Nepal, India, Bhutan and Bangladesh do.
