@gurujammy Many - Sense of hopelessness; depression; lack of self-esteem; remittance subsidy; income via spouse working; gun lifestyle / criminal proceeds gives easy money; lack of work ethic; misplaced life values & priorities; degrading work terms/conditions; feeling enslaved/oppressed.
@gurujammy@bomeallynelson People who emigrate tend to have drive, ambition, work ethic, desire to succeed, etc. Not to say that those who don’t emigrate lack these qualities - just that emigres are mostly like this. Biased sample gives skewed statistics.
@wcchen All Jamaican students should read “The Black Jacobins” by CLR James as part of their history curriculum to understand about Haiti and the wider Caribbean shared colonial heritage, including enslavement and emancipation.
@DalveyG@gurujammy My father was Jamaica’s first native Chief Parliamentary Counsel; led in the creation & revision of country’s independent Constitution. He was a patriot and a QC & awarded an OD. He’d be turning in his grave to see what has happened to his beloved country. Political expediency.
@gurujammy It appears to me that by and large we the people don’t “give our PM power”. The PMs take power and rule over us masses as docile sheep. Problem is global. The unaccountability of our politicians and leaders. So much trouble in the world.. Jah know, Bob seh so! Everywhere is War…
@gurujammy Touché my friend. So CUI BONO by sending the JDF soldiers into Haiti? Ha ! Haiti is a tragedy which Jamaica should learn more from. All Jamaicans should read “The Black Jacobins” by CLR James as part of history lessons. So relevant to the world today!!
Today, August 9, is International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples: The Taíno were Jamaica's (Xaymaca) first human settlers, arriving on the island from the South American mainland 650-900 AD. When Columbus came in 1494 there were 100,000. It was a tragic encounter; within 40 years they had been almost wiped out by murder, enslavement, and disease. But they survive in our blood as recent studies have revealed that many Jamaicans carry Taíno DNA.

@gurujammy@YouTube As Mark Twain once said "The rumours of my death have been greatly exaggerated?"… Commonwealth is in fact growing with new countries joining recently who don’t have English as one of their official languages!! Gabon & Togo. Meanwhile Niger, Mali & BFaso looking war with ECOWAS?
@kaminajsmith@mfaftja Something probably got lost in translation! However I have had instances where there is also a lack of mutual appreciation of how parties from different cultures treat “time” - both as a resource (literally financial) and as a constituent of respect (degree of importance)
@gurujammy Globally, one gets the sense that the laissez faire capitalistic system has run its course. Most People just want to be treated with respect, not exploited, have hope for future and see good prevail over evil. And Others don’t care.
@gurujammy Digital Nomads - some right there in Jamaica. During COVIDS19 people moved all over the world Some never came back - why would they? Live in Portugal, Costa Rica or Thailand and get paid US$. Some even in Jamaica.
@gurujammy Illegal ownership of ASSAULT weapons by criminals is crime that has to be combatted on ANOTHER level, than just raw firepower. Remember how Al Capone met his end. Use field intelligence and an honest legal system.
@gurujammy Now remember that the responders to this are a limited group - those bothering to respond and from only those who follow your Tweets. Not scientific enough for me to conclude anything Chris. Good discussions though!!
“Identity” is both how we see ourselves & how others see us.
