I record every scene on my phone, my lines and my scene partner's, then play it back in the car until it is in my body instead of my head. Never the whole script at once. Scene by scene.

I ran wardrobe off a rack in the corner. Two or three of every piece, sorted by actor, collected and washed every night. One ripped shirt with no backup can end a shoot day.

Residuum was my first time directing. Vilma and I did it together. I had played the lead in our three films before it, and the jump from in front of the camera to behind it is shorter than people think.

One of the simplest ways to create suspense:

Show us the character.
Show us where they’re looking.
DON’T show us what they see. 👀🎬

Now the audience has a question.

Sometimes what’s outside the frame is more interesting than what’s inside it.

A scene can be beautifully written, beautifully acted and beautifully shot…

That’s one of the hardest lessons in filmmaking.
