Phil Maffetone and Peter Defty provide a masterclass in optimizing health and performance by reconnecting with our evolutionary biology by challenging the myths propagated by modern corporate interests.
Both emphasize the importance of:
* Individuality in health metrics
* The transformative power gained through optimizing fat metabolism
* The risks of a carbohydrate-heavy diet.
* Self reliance on our own agency to take back our health.

Recap: ๐๐๐
โYesterdayโs marathon was completed as an integrated part of my Ironman preparation rather than as a standalone peak race. The preparations were therefore different from a traditional marathon build up, with no specific marathon blocks and relatively few long, long runs, but with consistent and structured training following the OFM principles over the past six months.
Based on stable performances and strong development during this period, the goal was still set to break three hours. The lead up to race day felt controlled and confident, and the support from Peter Defty contributed positively both mentally and practically before the start. The nutrition strategy was simple and well tested, using Vespa both before and during the race, with cola taken after approximately 35 km for additional readily available energy towards the finish.
The race was paced conservatively, with the first 25 kilometers feeling smooth and controlled. Fatigue increased gradually, and especially after 35 km the effort became physically demanding, but by consciously increasing intensity, maintaining focus on technique and relying on mental discipline, pace could be sustained.
The final kilometers were finished with a long sprint. The final time was 2:57:43, resulting in seventh place overall and second place in the 45โ50 age group. The result confirms that long term consistency, combined with proper pacing, nutrition and experience, enables strong marathon execution even without a full marathon specific training cycle, and provides a solid platform moving forward toward Ironman. A special thanks to Vespa for being a reliable part of the fueling strategy.โ

Recap: ๐๐๐
โThe 2026 Black Canyon Ultras was such a phenomenal event! Despite having temperatures in the high 80s in the days leading up to the race, and then rain the day before, race day was perfect! The temperature dropped to the 40โs at the start and stayed in the 70โs throughout the day with clear blue and sunny skies!
My day was nearly perfect as well. Thanks to Vespa, I was able to keep my nutrition simple and managed the duration of the race without any GI trouble at all! The only problem I ran into was the formation of blisters on one of my heels and one big toe. Luckily for me, it didnโt hurt very much after it broke at mile 50 and I was able to finish my first 100k with a smile on my face! Lesson learned: start the Squirrels Nut Butter early and often!
Recovery has been slow, but I am ready and excited to get back to the Swim/Bike/Run with Ironman 70.3 Hawaii, Ironman Lake Placid and Ultraman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii to close out the year!โ
Dr. Linda Eldred Frazier joins Peter Defty in a conversation on the intricacies of women's health and their long term ramifications.
Dr. Frazier openly talks about her years following the conventional โhealthyโ dietary advice of a high carbohydrate diet and how doing so resulted in being diagnosed with Celiac in 2005.
The turning point was reading the Primal Blueprint which led Dr. Linda in the right direction eventually leading to Peter, VESPA and OFM. Within a few short years Linda has achieved a lifetime Personal Best time in the marathon at the age of 64 and completing an IronMan Triathlon at the age of 65.
