# The Evolution of Cannabis Security: Why Layers Matter
When I entered Oregon's cannabis industry in 2011, security was often viewed as a regulatory requirement.
Install cameras.
Install an alarm.
Pass inspection.
Move on.
Fifteen years later, I've learned a simple truth:
The strongest cannabis security programs are not built on cameras, alarms, or guards.
They're built on layers.
Before entering the private security industry, I served as a U.S. Air Force firefighter and rescue technician assigned to RED HORSE operations. One lesson from that experience has stayed with me throughout my career:
Never rely on a single system.
You build overlapping layers so that when one fails, another remains.
That philosophy has shaped how we've approached security at Veterans Security Group since 2011.
A camera records an incident.
A security program prevents, detects, delays, and responds to incidents.
Those are very different things.
The most effective cannabis operators focus on four core layers:
• People
• Physical Protection
• Surveillance & Detection
• Response Capability
But today there's a fifth layer becoming increasingly important:
**Intelligence.**
Business owners are overwhelmed by alerts, compliance updates, camera notifications, access control events, vendor emails, and operational concerns.
The challenge is no longer collecting information.
The challenge is knowing what matters.
That's one of the reasons we built VSG Nexus.
Rather than creating another dashboard, our goal was to create a Digital Chief Security Officer that helps operators understand:
• What requires attention
• What risks exist today
• What actions should be prioritized
• What vulnerabilities need mitigation
Most importantly, Nexus applies AI to the specific facility it's evaluating.
Not generic security advice.
Facility-specific intelligence.
The future of cannabis security isn't simply more cameras or larger budgets.
It's combining people, processes, technology, response capabilities, and intelligence into a unified system.
Because eventually every layer will be tested.
The question is whether the layers behind it are ready.

#VeteransSecurityGroup internal company personnel information folder document we give to clients, etc., could be useful to any #veteran submitting #resumes and looking to set themselves apart. All info in the document is #ChatGPT API-verified multiple times, and it comes with supporting documents where you can verify it online. Each one is unique to the person, so not everyone’s going to have #cannabis leaves and #guns, with #tattoos, etc., on their document. Any veteran, send me your name and a current photo of yourself, and I’ll get that made up for you [email protected] #PortlandOregon
