Not to be that guy, but there were patches in the PS1/2 era, they just weren't annoying.

PC games had you download and manually install them not even required, and console games had "revised" versions pumped out with fixes. You'll often see it if you download ROMs/ISOs

There's a lot of videos out there showing the small differences between the versions of PlayStation games.
