A lot of people are reacting emotionally to this Papa Ajasco conversation, but from an intellectual property perspective the situation is actually quite straightforward.

In most film and television productions, the actor who plays a character does not own the character. The intellectual property in the character, including the name, story universe, and commercial exploitation, usually belongs to the creator or the production company that developed the work.

If a character like Papa Ajasco was created within a production owned by Wale Adenuga Productions and subsequently protected through copyright or trademark registration, the legal rights to control how that character is used would belong to the producer, not the actor who portrayed it.

This is why characters in major franchises around the world can be recast. The character remains the property of the creator or studio, while actors perform the role under contract.

The more important conversation here should be about contracts and industry structure. Many actors in early Nollywood productions were paid fixed fees without long term royalty arrangements or participation in the commercial success of the characters they helped make famous.

The lesson for today’s creatives is simple. Understand the ownership of intellectual property and the terms of your contract before taking on a role. In entertainment, the rights to the character often outlive the performance itself.
