Someone asked me, "Why blockchain games?" or "Why fully on-chain games?" It seems they are comparing traditional games to blockchain-based ones, expecting a reason why blockchain should be chosen over conventional methods. While I instinctively believe that blockchain games represent the future, the reasoning may not be immediately clear to everyone. However, I believe it's essential to approach this from a historical perspective to highlight the potential of blockchain in gaming.

Looking back, when single-player games dominated the market, people simply referred to them as "games." Then, with the emergence of online games, a new term, "online games," was introduced to identify those that leveraged the internet for multiplayer interaction. Initially, this was considered novel, and the term helped distinguish between the two categories. However, as online connectivity became more ubiquitous, the distinction between "online" and other games faded, and people once again referred to them simply as "games," even though they continued to rely on internet infrastructure for data exchange and player interaction.

Today, we find ourselves in a similar situation with blockchain technology. Terms like "blockchain game," "NFT game," and "crypto game" have emerged to differentiate these games, which adopt new technological features, partly due to marketing purposes and the "modern" or "trendy" nature of blockchain. However, these games currently face barriers such as slow transaction speeds, gas fees, and complicated wallet onboarding, which hinder their widespread adoption. Despite these challenges, I believe that as blockchain technology evolves, many of these obstacles will be addressed.

In the future, blockchain could replace many existing features in games, providing higher levels of security, data integrity, and transparency. Features such as payment transactions, player-to-player interactions, and data storage could all be handled on-chain, enhancing both functionality and security. Just as online games became mainstream and lost the "online" label, I believe blockchain games will experience a similar transformation. As the technology advances and becomes more user-friendly, people will naturally adopt it, and "blockchain game" will eventually become synonymous with "game."

Thus, to answer the question: Blockchain games are not merely an alternative, but an evolution, offering enhanced features such as decentralization, security, and player ownership. As these advantages become more apparent and barriers to adoption are lowered, blockchain will likely integrate into gaming as seamlessly as online features once did. Ultimately, games that incorporate blockchain technology will simply be known as "games," with blockchain serving as a fundamental, yet invisible, part of the gaming experience.
