Aguko Mirembe Victoria @cehurduganda brought it back to basics: civic space isn’t just about politics or voting. It’s rooted in our civil rights under Article 38 of the Ugandan Constitution: freedom of expression, association, assembly, and access to information.

She reminded us that civic space shows up in everyday things too: digital activism, community volunteering, peer education, petitions, local mobilization.

Ms Victoria Mirembe, a CEHURD intern, explains that self-care does not replace healthcare services. Rather, it complements them by empowering individuals to take an active role in managing their health while recognizing when professional medical care is needed. When practiced appropriately, self-care improves health outcomes, promotes informed health-seeking behaviour, and strengthens the continuum of care.

Civic space also extends to volunteering. You can become a community volunteer or a peer educator. Educate your peers, especially those younger than you.

Because at the end of the day, someone has to take up the responsibility to nurture the next generation. That too is civic space.
