Take My Breath Away was written by Giorgio Moroder and Tom Whitlock especially for the romantic scene of Top Gun (1986). The band Berlin almost refused the song, as it had not been composed by any of the members and did not match the new wave style they advocated at the time. There was strong internal tension in the group, and some members saw the track as something external. Even so, Moroder insisted and convinced the film's producers to include it.

The result was historic: the song reached #1 in several countries, including the United States, and became the biggest hit of Berlin's career. In 1987, "Take My Breath Away" won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and turned the band into a world-renowned name, something that ironically accelerated the breakup. The pressure and internal divergences increased so much that the group dissolved soon after.

Tom Whitlock, the lyricist, was a mechanic and met Moroder by repairing his Ferrari. During the service, he offered to write lyrics, and ended up creating both "Take My Breath Away" and "Danger Zone". Giorgio Moroder even tested other singers before nominating Berlin, but the producers rejected them all.
