Meet Gyaneshwari Yadav, the Chhattisgarh Police officer who just won India's fifth medal of Commonwealth Games 2026, hours ago in Glasgow.

Born in 2003, she grew up in Bhodiya village, Rajnandgaon district, in a modest family where her father Deepak worked as an electrician through real financial strain. She now serves as an Assistant Sub-Inspector with the Chhattisgarh Police, balancing that job with a weightlifting career that's rewritten the record books in her weight class.

Her breakthrough came in 2023 at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Greater Noida, where she won two golds, in the 45kg and 49kg categories, beating a tournament favorite along the way. In 2025, Chhattisgarh gave her the Gundadhur Samman, its highest sporting honor, after she finished fifth at the 2024 World Championships in Bahrain.

On July 27, 2026, competing in the women's 53kg category, she opened with 88kg in snatch, then traded Commonwealth Games records lift-for-lift with Nigeria's Onome Didih in the clean and jerk. Yadav hit 111kg to reclaim the record, but Didih answered with 113kg for gold. Yadav finished with 199kg total, all six lifts successful, for silver.

An electrician's daughter from a village most maps don't zoom into just traded world records with a Nigerian champion, on purpose, in front of everyone.
