Denmark has submitted May el-Toukhy’s WOMAN UNKNOWN as the official entry for Best International Feature Film at the 99th Academy Awards.

Marie, a young nanny and housemaid, is about to marry the wealthy older widower, Christian, for whom she is working. But Marie guards a shameful secret. During World War II, she was in an intimate relationship with a German soldier. Now Marie’s past threatens to catch up with her.

Cuba has selected Carlos Larrazabal’s MALECÓN as its pick for the Oscar for Best International Feature Film at the 99th Academy Awards.

The film, shot entirely in Havana, Cuba, follows Elvis, a teenager who kills his stepfather in defense of his mother and is sentenced to 10 years in prison. Upon release, he discovers that his high school girlfriend is now the wife of the most powerful thug in the neighborhood, and that his old buddy has come out as homosexual and is working as a prostitute.
