MY TAKE: VVIPs served SIR notices isn’t the story: Don’t worry, they’ll all find their way back onto the electoral rolls. But what about the lakhs of poor and marginalised who are being left out without the means to fight the system? Repeat: @ECISVEEP and the SC have much to answer for when a process shifts the burden of proof from the state to the citizen. A right as fundamental as the vote cannot become a privilege granted by the ‘system’.
Why should Rahul Gandhi always have to carry the burden of morality in politics?
The man sitting in the PM’s chair has been doing these theatrics, and much worse, since 2014, and even before that as Gujarat CM. We have normalised all of it. But the moment Congress does something, we start holding it to a completely different moral standard.
Question Congress, absolutely. As the main opposition, it shouldn’t get a free pass. But sometimes it feels like people are trying too hard to balance their political stand.
And come on, Rahul wasn’t even mimicking the PM. He just gave a comedian a stage. He wasn’t the comedian, and he wasn’t doing the act himself like others have.
Yes, yes, I know the “we expect more from Rahul” argument. Fair enough. But cut him some slack too. Many of you are always ready to call out Congress even when there’s nothing wrong. Remember the AI Summit protest? So many liberals immediately turned their guns on Congress then as well. So please do better!
@RahulGandhi

@IndiaPostOffice Your delivery person is not even attempting delivery but from 2 consecutive days I get text that it could not be delivered due to resident being absent, which is absolutely false. Nobody is available on helpline either. It is a time sensitive and critical package
@pRRRadeep When that day comes, it’ll very difficult for BJP to rise from that colossal failure. I’m surprised they have still not realised this, and are not cutting their losses, while spinning some lame story in the name of patriotism to save some face and feed andhbhakts.
"Five hundred metres from Parliament, students were brutally attacked by forces that report to one man: Home Minister Amit Shah.
There are only two possibilities. First, he authorised the attack on the students — in which case he is culpable. Second, he had no idea that it was taking place — which means that he is entirely incompetent. Either way, as Home Minister, what happened on that day is his responsibility, and he must resign."
- LoP Shri Rahul Gandhi
I went to watch stand up comic Kunal Kamra live for the first time yesterday, at a small underground venue in Bengaluru.
Several of his ‘Standing Up’ shows in another Bengaluru locality had been cancelled after right-wing groups threatened to disrupt them, and the shows were moved to this venue. When we arrived, there were about nine policemen stationed outside. We had to hand over our IDs so that, in case anyone created a ruckus, the police would have the details of everyone inside.
It felt strangely like walking into a potential danger zone just to watch a stand-up show.
And yet, the police in this Congress-ruled state were not there to stop the comedian (for a change). They were there to protect him and us and our right to laugh.
I had expected Kunal to be a little cocky. Perhaps a comedian who had been through as much as he has would develop a certain swagger, a sense of being above the rest of us. But that wasn’t what I saw at all. He was incredibly human.
He spoke hilariously about a venue being broken down by Shiv Sainiks in Mumbai, about being repeatedly summoned and harassed after speaking about Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, and about the extraordinary machinery that seems to swing into action when a comedian says something powerful people don’t like.
But there was no false bravado in the way he told these stories. There was vulnerability. There was self-deprecation. There was storytelling and insight alongside the gags and one-liners.
There was no bitterness in him. No vindictiveness. He is a man who simply believes that he has a right to speak, and that nobody has the right to take that away from him.
Kunal did not allow any video recording of the performance. There is still a very real fear that a stray clip can be taken out of context, go viral and invite an endless cycle of outrage, threats and lawsuits. Unlike comedians with enormous commercial ecosystems (he mentioned Samay Raina) around them, Kunal doesn’t have the luxury of a battery of lawyers at his beck n call. Also, a recording doesn’t just expose the comedian. It can expose everyone who laughed in that room to a completely different kind of backlash.
Later, backstage, I met Kunal and the wonderful Shyam Rangeela, who did an absolutely hilarious act as Prime Minister Modi. There was also an interview between Kunal and Shyam’s Modi that I won’t reveal here. You really should watch the show to see it. All I will say is that it felt strangely satisfying to see ‘Modiji’ finally answer questions from the public.
I also told Kunal something that had struck me during the evening. Before 2014, we were used to laughing at our political leaders.
Manmohan Singh was mocked. Rajiv Gandhi was mocked. V. P. Singh was mocked. Lalu Prasad Yadav was mocked. Television satire regularly lampooned our politicians. We had caricatures, spoofs, political cartoons and comedy shows that treated even the most powerful people in the country as fair game.
Nobody seemed to think that laughing at a Prime Minister or Chief Minister was an act of treason.
Somewhere between 2014 and 2026, we seem to have developed a fear of even laughing at power.
And yesterday, in that tiny Bangalore room, I realised how much we have missed it. Because for 100 minutes, 100 people laughed freely.
And perhaps that is why protecting comedians like @kunalkamra88 and @ShyamRangeela matters.
They remind us that powerful people are not beyond laughter, and that we, the public, actually hold the power.
. @NarendraModi,
The more you go after Ruchika and hound her
The more Ruchikas you will create
Respect is earned, not forced through police cases.
This generation isn’t the one that you brainwashed a decade ago.
Absolutely false.
This question was asked twice. The first time, I was interrupted before I could respond which is the clip now being circulated.
The second time, the Republic journalist asked the same question again (there’s dearth of relevant questions). I clearly said that “since they were not on the ground covering our movement for the past 1.5 months, it was our volunteers who stood with us day and night through Delhi's scorching heat, who deserved a get-together before heading back home.”
Of course, they chose not to air that part because it exposed their own absence. Good job being useless, Republic (& others running this).
Also, wondering if they ever asked this question to ministers who kept quiet for 1.5 months. 👀
🚨URGENT STATEMENT🚨
The interim order passed by the Supreme Court of India in the batch of PILs related to the CJP protest must ring alarm bells across the country. In particular, Direction No. 4, which permits governments to proceed with existing FIRs and carry out investigations, raises extremely serious concerns.
This direction stands in direct contradiction to the solemn assurance and guarantee extended by the Government of India to the youth of this nation on 25 July 2026, namely, that the FIRs would be withdrawn and that no protester would be directly or indirectly targeted for participating in the peaceful movement.
It was on the strength of that solemn assurance, and in complete good faith, that the Cockroach Janta Party called off its nationwide protest.
We now have a credible apprehension that the Government of India and BJP-ruled states may seek to use and weaponise this order of the Bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant to continue FIRs against individual protesters and subject them to great harassment. This was precisely our concern from day one: that courts could be used, directly or indirectly, to achieve political ends by targeting peaceful dissent.
Equally troubling is the fact that the interim order was not opposed by the government's lawyers, despite the Central Government being fully aware that talks/assurances with the CJP had continued until as recently as late last night and that a solemn agreement had already been arrived at on 25 July.
The court's uninformed order is therefore wholly unacceptable.
A solemn public assurance given to thousands of young students and protesters cannot be diluted, undermined, or rendered meaningless through subsequent legal developments, in a surreptitious manner. It only results in breach of public trust.
In any event, nothing in the interim order prevents the Government of India or the concerned BJP/NDA ruled State Governments from withdrawing the FIRs or deciding not to proceed against peaceful protesters, like done by Bihar and Assam governments. The power to withdraw or not pursue such cases continues to rest with the executive. The court has not mandated that governments must definitely continue with the FIRs. That would be a deliberate misreading. The Government must not invoke the Court’s order as a justification for reneging on the commitment it made on 25 July.
We therefore demand that the Government of India and the concerned BJP/NDA State Governments immediately place the terms of this solemn assurance before the Supreme Court in the pending proceedings so that there is complete transparency regarding the commitments already made to the youth of this country and so that the court can withdraw and make an informed order in the future.
The youth of India entered into this understanding in good faith. That good faith must not be betrayed. Institutions of constitutional importance must never be politicised and weaponised to not honour the guarantees.
The deadline for the Government of India to honour its guarantees expires today. We once again call upon it to fulfil every commitment it made: withdraw the FIRs, ensure that no protester is subjected to future punitive action, and honour both the letter and the spirit of the assurance that brought an end to the protest.
Failing this, and as previously declared, the Cockroach Janta Party will have no option but to resume its nationwide protest to protect the students and young protesters who stood up not for themselves alone, but for the future of this nation. A government that breaks its word cannot expect the youth to remain silent. If the guarantees are dishonoured, the streets of India will once again become the voice of its young.
