Imagine being a kid who dreams one day of becoming a veterinarian. Then fast forward to veterinary school and deciding to participate in a lab that cuts open healthy horses and then kills them when a sanctuary has offered to take them. This is what selling your soul looks like. This is moral disengagement. This is a crisis in our profession.

Most doctors at the Willowbrook didn’t recognize that infecting institutionalized children with hepatitis in order to study the disease’s transmission and progression was immoral either. They thought it was necessary to save others.
