It took me one train ride from Kraków to Warsaw to see what people mean.

​Two minutes in, an older Polish woman sitting across from me tapped hard on my laptop screen, pointed to a tiny decal on the window, and gave me a sharp, cold "Cisza."
​I felt instantly defensive. Is she serious? I’m just quietly running my business.

​I walked out to the corridor to finish the call, stepped back in, and actually looked around.
​The entire carriage was dead silent, spotless, and relaxed. People were working, reading, or resting in peace. I hadn't noticed when boarding: I had walked right into the Strefa Ciszy (Quiet Zone).

​It wasn't anti-foreigner hostility. It was pure respect for the rules.

​In Poland, public space belongs to everyone, which means no single individual gets to disrupt the collective peace for their own convenience. People respect order, and they expect you to do the same.
​In Germany, where I grew up, riding an ICE train today means endless delays, trash, and people blasting TikToks or taking speakerphone calls while staff look the other way to avoid confrontation. Public courtesy has been replaced by passive tolerance of chaos.
​When my family left Poland in the 90s, Germany was the gold standard for order. Today, Poland demands high standards because it actually values its society.
