#Sundance2026 Film 3: The Disciple
Wow this is amazing & so creative. Learning about the in depth history of the lost Wu Tang album and how it was made and how it was lost is so cool. The story is so much bigger and international and long lasting than you expect.
10/10 🍿
Joanna Natasegara’s documentary follows Azzougarh’s rise from Wu superfan to affiliate, and the fall that resulted when what started as a possible follow-up to his 2007 solo album 'I' slowly morphed into a full-on Wu-Tang album.

'The Disciple,' the doc on Wu Tang affiliate Cilvaringz that premiered at Sundance, offers an inside look at how a pet project turned into 'Once Upon a Time in Shaolin.'
It gets ugly.

THE DISCIPLE might be something you want to mess with as this highly entertaining doc pulls back the curtain on the most legendary “album no one’s ever heard” and the ultimate fanboy who worked his way into the inner circle. Though the story is told largely from his perspective, it still strikes a thoughtful balance in examining who did right, who did wrong, and what it means to protect the group’s image and legacy. Prior Wu-Tang knowledge not required to get fully locked in.
THE DISCIPLE: Bold and principled artistic statement or cynical commercial ploy? I’m not talking about Joanna Natasegara’s smart new doc “The Disciple,” one of my early #Sundance2026 faves, but the legendarily elusive Wu‑Tang Clan album “Once Upon a Time in Shaolin” it examines. More precisely, it probes Wu‑Tang affiliate/producer Tarik “Cilvaringz” Azzougarh’s controversial role in the creation — and deliberate non‑marketing — of the 2015 disc, a single physical copy sold for dizzying sums under dubious circumstances. The doc’s a hip‑hop mystery worthy of RZA’s genre‑splicing mind, where rap meets kung‑fu flicks and Staten Island philosophy in a single cut. And yet one burning question remains: Why is Cher on this album? 🌄 #Sundance
The sole physical copy of the Wu-Tang Clan’s double album “Once Upon a Time in Shaolin” — the most expensive piece of recorded music in the world — was played at a listening party for only the seventh time in its history at the Sundance Film Festival. https://t.co/ZxHRVSZyhJ
Wu Tang is forever 👐
Shout out The Disciple sold out premiere at @sundancefest’s largest theater
Great piece of art @RZA@CilvaringzWu@WuTangClan & filmmaker Joanna Natasegara
THE DISCIPLE is a fun, propulsive music documentary about one of the strangest stories in hip-hop history. It stands out from other entries in its genre because it doesn't feel like it's for fans only, offering plenty to enjoy for the faithful and novices alike. #Sundance2026
Even if you're not a Wu-Tan Clan fanatic (which I am not), THE DISCIPLE — about Cilvaringz and the making and fallout of Once Upon a Time in Shaolin — makes for an incredible and inspiring watch. Would heartily recommend. Premiering today at Sundance.

Just saw The Disciple premiere at Sundance.
A behind-the-scenes look at how Cilvaringz worked his way into the Wu-Tang inner circle and helped bring to life Once Upon a Time in Shaolin , the rarest album on earth.
Wu-Tang is forever.

Wu tang movie “disciple” should be biggest hit at Sundance. Shabazz the Dsiciple and Cappadonna shine absolutely at levels I have never seen
A disciple tour would be epic
