@AidanMokalla Hopefully this makes more sense- the light coming from the sun has many paths and angles, with some groups of photons being absorbed and re-emitted by other particles, some being reflected, and some making it to the ground. The combination of these creates varied penumbras!
@AidanMokalla Because light is scattered in the atmosphere and between all the objects in the environment, so it is blocking the path of those photons that would otherwise go through the object and light the ground below it

@AidanMokalla There arenβt many true non-reflective materials other than black holes- all objects reflect light in some way though some absorb more wavelengths than others. The splitting that Iβve drawn is a representation of photons bouncing off of the rod and changing direction :>

@AidanMokalla They travel as both points and waves and bounce off of everything- the double slit experiment is a great visualization of this. Photons are incredibly small and act really strangely, and shadows are basically cross sections of the light scattering from the object to the plane!
