Today, we celebrate the life and legacy of President Thabo Mbeki, a remarkable African leader, thinker, and pan-African visionary who played a pivotal role in shaping South Africa's transition to democracy and the continent's development.
Mbeki was born in the Eastern Cape to Govan and Epainette Mbeki, both dedicated fighters for liberation. From a young age, he was immersed in the politics of resistance. He joined the African National Congress (ANC) Youth League at the age of 14. By his late teens, he had gone into exile to continue the fight against apartheid.
During his time in exile, Mbeki developed his political ideas. He earned a Masterโs degree in Economics from the University of Sussex in the UK. He also moved up within the ANC, becoming an important figure in its international diplomacy and a close advisor to President Oliver Tambo.
After the unbanning of political organisations in 1990, Mbeki returned to South Africa and played a significant role in the negotiations that led to the establishment of democracy. He served as Deputy President under President Nelson Mandela from 1994 to 1999 and then became President of South Africa from 1999 to 2008.
As President, Mbeki promoted the African Renaissance, helped establish the African Union (AU), and worked to increase South Africaโs influence globally through economic diplomacy and peacebuilding across the continent. His presidency focused on economic growth, infrastructure, and regional integration, though it faced criticism for his approach to HIV/AIDS.
Since leaving office, Mbeki has continued to serve the continent through the Thabo Mbeki Foundation, which focuses on leadership, dialogue, and the renewal of Africa.
Today, we celebrate not just a birthday but a life of extraordinary leadership, unwavering dedication, and enduring service.
As our Patron, your continued commitment to the renewal of our continent and the importance of Africans telling their own stories inspires us deeply. Even in your latter years, your wisdom, vision, and passion remain a guiding light for generations to come.
We cannot wait to celebrate you and all that you represent! #Mbeki83
