I would go further and say that the human animal is not rational.
We are certainly capable of rational thought but that doesnt mean that is how we operate most of the time.
If one accepts this as true, then that greatly changes how you interact with others.
@RioStover@fakechuck support heavily taxing the rich or increasing the federal min. wage to something like $15 (i do support tying it to inflation tho & a moderate increase) for example.
@RioStover@fakechuck I like the guy, as he seems mostly genuine, especially in comparison to all the snakes & crooks in politics.
That being said, I no longer am a naive 24 yr old, I grew out of supporting (most?) of his policy stances. Today I find myself more center-left. I definitely don't....
@FritzPeasant I guess you'd have to talk to one of those people who answered "never", and see exactly what they were thinking.
Does "never" mean absolutely never, ever, under no circumstances? Because anyone should be able to think of, even hypothetically, of at least one circumstance
@FritzPeasant Yeah, I can't relate to saying absolutely never. Especially given all the many shenanigans that governments throughout the world in engage in TODAY including the Western "democratic" ones as well as our own!!
@FritzPeasant ended up in a desirable result, there are also so, many instances when it most definitely was not desirable.
So I guess it's somewhat alright if people err on the side of viewing political violence as distasteful.
@FritzPeasant resolving political/civil disputes have fractured & can no longer be depended upon. Otherwise you risk societal instability as what we observe in so many failed nation states currently & throughout history.
The fact of the matter is, for all the times that political violence...
@James_West_PhD@mtracey@HistoryBoomer of..acceptable modern warfare?
Were his goals & motivation within what is deemed as the "right" kind of goals & motivation (fucked up yes, but respectable). As in, if youre gonna commit grand acts of violence, at least make sure its for a politically respectable or worthy cause
@James_West_PhD@mtracey@HistoryBoomer Whats interesting about all of this is how changing a few of the details alters the perception of the act of violence
Osama Bin Laden while heinous, was apparently not a madman, because. the targets of his revolutionary ideology were what? More legitimate? Within the bounds...
@The_S_O_B@vaalkaar@memeticsisyphus has only gone up & up (artificially I might add). We also have lobbying & the outsized influence of corporations & the mega-rich in politics that we could focus on, but no, universal suffrage just desperately needed to be revisited.
Good fuckin grief
@The_S_O_B@vaalkaar@memeticsisyphus Setting that aside, given all the many forces in modern society that inhibit ppl from even wanting to have children or making home ownership so difficult, how tf is anyone revisiting that bs as a requirement for voting?
Sure, wages have stagnated whilst the cost of living...
@patrickhays2@xwanyex I see where you're coming from. For me it matters a great deal which liberals we are talking about. If they lean more radical leftist, then chances are they have a utopian vision of society, which means whatever progress we make won't ever be good enough.
@patrickhays2@xwanyex This is not a defense of "liberals" BTW, not by a long shot.
Suffice to say, its not clear what people really mean by their self-identified label, chances are high they havent thought out the full implications of what those words mean
@patrickhays2@xwanyex lingers on. I guess it satisfies the need to reduce the complexity of the real world, to reduce things to nice & neat dichotomies that are more readily digestible.
Setting that aside, what do "conservatives" even stand to conserve? The social order of the 1950's?....
@ThomasSowell exactly the same, on all the relevant dimensions of life. Depending on the social context, we tailor how we interact with others. Still, you try to treat everyone with a certain amount of dignity & respect irrespective of all the many differences between individuals.
@ThomasSowell I mean, this becomes a matter of definitions.
Moral & political equality means everyone has the same moral worth & are entitled to same rights & protections. No one is inherently better or worse than everyone else.
Obviously this doesnt mean that you treat everyone...
