Congress did not simply make taxes on tips and overtime disappear. These were created as income-tax deductions that eligible workers claim on their tax returns—not blanket exemptions from taxation.

Tips and overtime are still generally subject to payroll taxes, and the overtime deduction generally applies only to the overtime premium—not your entire overtime paycheck.

Call it what it is: a tax break. That’s still a benefit.

But “NO TAX ON TIPS” and “NO TAX ON OVERTIME” dramatically oversells what was actually passed.
