newly surfaced video appears to show the broad peak avalanche that involved renowned mountaineer nims purja and an international team of 10 climbers while they were moving between camps 2 and 3.

filmed from below, the continuous handheld footage captures a massive wall of snow breaking loose high on the mountain before an expanding powder cloud surges down the couloir and engulfs the lower slopes.

the avalanche unfolds over roughly 40 seconds — revealing the sheer scale of the slide from the ground.

the footage has been circulating within the climbing community and is being shared as showing the broad peak avalanche.

here is where things stand with the broad peak avalanche.

on thursday an avalanche swept through the route between camps 2 and 3 on broad peak, catching an international climbing team led by nirmal nims purja.

search and recovery efforts have continued under extremely difficult conditions, making even basic details difficult to confirm.

that is also why the reporting has been messy. major news organizations are not all reporting the same recovery numbers. specialist climbing outlets have continued updating their reporting as new information reaches base camp.

local organizations in pakistan have also released updates as rescue teams return from the mountain. everyone is working with information arriving at different times.

much of todays conversation has centered on purjas status. there have been extensive private discussions throughout the climbing community, along with posts from people around the expedition and the broader mountaineering community.

i am intentionally not repeating any of that information because none of it should be treated as established fact until it has been confirmed by officials.

for now the safest approach is to follow what has been publicly confirmed and recognize that this remains an active search and recovery operation.

i have attached the avalanche video below because it provides one of the clearest views yet of the avalanche itself.

Press Release by Govt of #GilgitBaltistan on #BroadPeak Rescue Mission.

On 29th June 2026, a 10-member international mountaineering expedition entered #Skardu District to attempt Broad Peak (8,047 meters) in District Shigar, Gilgit-Baltistan.

The expedition was organized through #Karakoram Expeditions, Imagine Climb Pakistan, and Blue Sky Trek & Tours Company.

The expedition comprised the following members:

On 30th July 2026, the climbing team was last contacted at 9:00 a.m. by the handling tour operator. However, subsequent contact could not be established. At 8:00 p.m., it was reported that an avalanche occurred while the team was ascending from Camp-II to Camp-III at an approximate altitude of 6,600 meters.

The official rescue mission commenced following a formal request from the tour operators at 8:30 a.m. on 31st July 2026. Pakistan Army Aviation helicopters deployed a three-member civilian rescue team led by renowned mountaineer Mr. Sirbaz Khan to Broad Peak Base Camp. The team also included Mr. Waqar and Mr. Shehzad.

The rescue team began its ascent on foot from Base Camp towards Camp-II and recovered the following three bodies/remains:

Ms. Nadhira Ahmed Abdullah Al Harthy – Oman
Ms. Sarah Mallory – USA (remains of body)
Mr. Pur Bahadur Gurung – Nepal

The three recovered bodies have been shifted to CMH by Pakistan Army Aviation helicopters, and legal formalities for identification are underway. Due to inclement weather, the search and rescue operation for the day has been suspended and will resume the following day, with additional Sherpas from other expeditions joining the effort. The rescue team remains stationed at the base camp and has reported spotting several more bodies through drone footage.

The rescue operation is being conducted under extremely challenging terrain and high-altitude weather conditions by the #Pakistan Army in coordination with local high-altitude climbers and rescuers. The Government of Gilgit-Baltistan extends its heartfelt condolences to the families of the climbers and remains committed to supporting the ongoing search and rescue mission, as well as the transportation of the recovered bodies to their respective countries.

Nirmal `Nims' Purja, the greatest mountaineer of his generation sent me a wonderful voice-note from Camp II of Broad Peak on Wed night, less than 14 hours before the expedition he was leading was struck by an avalanche. We can only hope he has survived this ordeal along with others in the expedition he was leading. It was tough for me to pen down my thoughts - but there will be a report out soon. TV report as well.
